I'm trying to control music, including picking songs, not just pause, skip around, and volume; it seems there's no way for me to change a song on a smart speaker from my pixel 7 pro.

Hi Tplooby,
Im not sure I understand fully what you are asking.
Are you trying to control an app (youtube music) on the casting device (Pixel 7) via a Nest speaker?
If so I think you would have to try to have the Assistant on the phone be the controller and not the Nest speaker. I don't think it would have permission to do too much the other way around. Mind you I'm not sure about it.

Basically, when I play music on a smarklt speaker, I just want to be able to choose the songs via my Phone, seems voice is the only option

Hi Tplooby,
Thanks for reaching out. I appreciate @Tplooby for helping here.
Currently, the only way to control the songs playing from YouTube Music on the Google Home/Nest speakers is by using the media button on the Google Home app or via voice command. As an alternative, you can cast songs from the YouTube Music app to your speaker and control it via the native app. Also, you can use the Google Assistant app on your phone to change and control the music playing on your speaker by saying, "Hey Google, stop, pause, or play <song title> on <name of your speaker>."
Here are the links that might be helpful to you:
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. Using the media player via the home app is exactly what I've been trying to do unsuccessfully. I can only pause, skip, or replay a song, in addition to volume controls. My question specifically is, within the home / media app, is there anyway to enable song picking, rather than just those basic controls of skip, pause, replay and vol?

Hey Tplooby,
Currently, there are no other options available to control the music on the media player via the Google Home app. I understand that this feature would be very useful and with that, we’d like to encourage you to send a feedback regarding this and for any features that you’re looking forward to using with our Google Nest devices.
Feel free to respond to this if you have additional questions, otherwise we'll be locking this thread in 24 hours.
Cheers,
Muddi
