Default Music Speaker Not Working

Bish
Community Member

I have a Google Home Mini that has it's Default Music Speaker set to a Chromecast Audio. This in turn is pugged into my Jamo i300 speaker system via 3.5mm jack.

This setup worked almost flawlessly until the recent Chromecast problems. My Chromecast Audio is back up and running and I can cast to it from my phone without a problem.

When my Chromecast Audio first died and didn't realise it was a global issue, I  bought an iPod Dock Bluetooth adaptor and temporarily set the Home Mini's Default Music Speaker to that. It wasn't a brilliant solution, audio quality was much reduced over the Chromecast Audio solution.

Once the Chromecast Audio was back up, I switched it all back. The Bluetooth iPod adaptor has been unplugged and unpaired from the Home Mini. Now though, I cannot get the Home Mini to use any other device as it's Default Music Speaker. None of the other Home or Nest devices will respect the Default Music Speaker setting, Strangely though, the only non Google device I have, an LG WK7, has no issues with this setting and will cast it's output to the Chromecast Audio as expected.

Is there a problem with the new app update that may have broken this feature? Has anyone else got this problem?

Any help appreciated.

Hi @Bish,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I'm sorry to hear you're unable to set the Google Home Mini's default music speaker to another device. I understand your concern, especially given that it previously worked with Chromecast Audio and stopped functioning after the recent Chromecast issue. Help's here!

Since the LG WK7 is working as expected and you can cast its output to the Chromecast Audio, I suggest performing a factory reset on both the Google Home Mini and the Chromecast Audio to resolve potential software glitches. For guided instructions, please refer to these articles: Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays and How to factory reset your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Hi @jenniffert , I shall give this a try later, however, I do have the same issue on all Google Home/Nest devices. Even if trying to default audio to another Google Home/Nest device rather than the Chromecast Audio. So it doesn't manifest as a device issue, but I will try.

Thanks for following up!

I appreciate your patience and cooperation. After completing the factory reset, please check if you have the latest version of the Google Home app.

Please let me know the results so we can continue investigating your case.

Hi @jenniffert ,

I have just completed factory resets on both the Chromecast Audio and Google Home Mini. The fault persists, the Home Mini does not respect the Default Audio Speaker setting and simply plays through its own speaker.

My Google Home app version is 3.30.1.6 with no further updates being offered in the Play Store.

Hi @Bish,

Thanks for following up!

I appreciate the workaround you've already performed. To continue investigating, it's necessary to confirm that the Google Home Mini is functioning correctly and properly set up in the Google Home app. Therefore, I'd like to confirm the following:

  • Does the Google Home Mini respond to normal voice commands (e.g., playing music, answering questions)?
  • Could you confirm whether the intended setup is Home Mini to Chromecast Audio to Jamo i300?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi @jenniffert , yes I can confirm the Home Mini does respond as expected to other commands. I can also confirm the intended setup is as described.

I too have this issue and nothing seems to correct it. It is clearly caused by a Google update that Google does not want to fix. Anyone with a success story, please chime in for the community specialist does not know how to fix this.
