Different speakers with different spotify accounts

My two teenagers each have a Nest in their bedroom. At the moment they are linked to my Spotify account but it means they can’t listen to music at the same time as each other, and I can’t listen to it on my phone either. We have Spotify Family Premium so everyone has their own account so I want each Nest to link to their own accounts. How can I do this please?

Are your teenagers Spotify accounts kids accounts, or normal Spotify accounts?

Are your teenagers' speakers setup with your account, or were they setup using their Google accounts? Are they normal Google accounts, or ones managed by family link?

Hi David. I’m pretty sure my kids have normal Spotify accounts under our Family Premium subscription. Their Google Nest Minis were originally set up with my google account (as devices on my Home system) but since I posted this question I’ve deleted them and restored them back to factory settings as “new” devices. For one kid I’ve then set them up with their own Home account and added their Nest as their own device. But when I’ve tried to do the same for the other kid their Home account doesn’t seem to give me an option to add any devices?! So I’m rather confused now. My preference would be for all of the devices to be on my own Home but for them to be able to link their own Spotify accounts as the default music player on their Minis. But I’m starting to think that this just isn’t possible. Any help appreciated though.

If they're normal Spotify and Google accounts, that's great. You should be able to:

  1. Reset the speaker
  2. Login to the Google Home app on their device
  3. Setup the speaker using their account
  4. Link their Spotify account in the app and set it as the default music provider

Hi David. I’ve tried that but the Google Home app on my son’s device doesn’t show the option to add the Nest (or any other device) for some reason? Is that normal?

Hey gjm80,

Apologize for the delays. Thanks to @David_K for helping.

Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. To confirm, is there a plus sign on the upper left corner of the Google Home app? Are you signed in on the right account?

Cheers,

Muddi

Oops. Sorry for not responding.
No my son’s Google Home app does not show a plus sign so I’m not able to add a new device. It does show the other devices already connected to our home WiFi but no option to add a new one. Does this sound right?

Thanks for trying to help.

Hi gjm80,

That's an interesting one! For confirmation, the plus sign on the upper left corner is not visible when you open the Google Home app in your son's phone, right? It would help a lot if you could use a different phone to see the difference. Also, check the settings on your son's phone to see if it's zoomed in. The fact that you're able to add one of your child means you're doing the right thing. Let us isolate this.

Looking forward to your responses.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan.

I’m now wondering if it’s the accounts they’re using that’s the difference. The one that isn’t working is a “supervised account” that is subject to parental controls via family link. So maybe that’s the reason why he doesn’t see the + sign and can’t add devices? That might make more sense?

Is it worth going back to my original question which was whether I can have their Nests registered on my Home account but let them log in to their own Spotify accounts on their devices? At the moment it defaults to my linked Spotify account which means we can’t listen to different things at the same time.

Again, thanks for trying to help with this. If you feel like it’s a bit of a waste of your time feel free to say so.

Hi gjm80,

Apologies for the delayed response and thank you for your patience. The supervised account that you mentioned has restrictions or filters to it, I believe? If so, would it be okay for us to try to link a different account to your son's Spotify, preferably with a Gmail domain, and add it as a home member. From there we can see the difference. You can't invite anyone using a Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account and a Google Account for children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country). It's also different from a Family Account. For more detailed information and troubleshooting, click the links below:

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Dan
