Google Assistant Not Showing Video Results

When I ask my Google Nest/Home Mini “show me videos of blank”, it then asks me which video option I would like to play.

At this point, it is supposed to display the actual options on my TV via my Chromecast, but it doesn't.

If I say “#1”, it will play whatever option 1 is, but the problem is that I have no idea what video that is because it doesn't give me the thumbnail preview anymore.

This has been broken for at least 2 years now, as other posts on this forum easily confirm.  Please do not comment generically, ie, reboot, factory reset, etc. there have been over a hundred complaints on this, it needs to be fixed — it is a major issue for accessibility.

I have performed a full factory reset, reconnected everything in the Google Home App - even removed everything from my Google account and has my wife add everything to her own - and if course have done all updates available. - it still doesn't work.

Many users have reported the issue but to no avail.

I never expected this kind of bad customer support regarding search results from a search company like Google. I am a user who relies on voice assistants. I have several Google Home/Nest/Chromecast products, and used to have Nexus and still have a Pixel...

It's clearly time to upgrade, and I'm beginning to think that I might actually need to switch to a non-Android mobile, and switch voice assistants, and use different casting services/devices.  In fact, I might just ditch Google completely; DuckDuckGo seems to be a better search engine anyway, and at least they seem to care about their customers.  Same with ProtonMail, ProtonDrive, ProtonPass, etc.  Brave is a good Chromium-derived web browser, but I can always go with Firefox or its derivatives if I want to stay as far away as possible from Google, which between their continued ties to a genocidal apartheid regime and the fact that they clearly don't care about accessibility and their customers anymore...  It might be time.

I'll probably switch to something like GrapheneOS for now, since I'll be able to switch over from. Andriod to it fairly easily, and have already switched to Brave/Proton for almost everything else.  It was sneaky (and I'd assume that it's against antitrust laws) of Google to integrate the Photos app so heavily into Android, but I've found Ente to be a pretty darned good alternative.

And you know what?  None of these things is less useful than their Google counterparts - in fact, since they've been de-Googled and are more focused on privacy and security, I've been a super happy switching so far.

Hello HoverVet,

Thank you for reaching out. I understand that when you ask your Google Assistant for videos, it displays a blank screen. I am happy to assist you with this. I apologize for any inconvenience this is causing; I know it can be frustrating when your devices do not work properly. To better understand your situation, could you please answer the following questions?

  • What type of Chromecast do you have?

  • Could you send me a picture showing the blank screen when you request videos?

  • have you notice any error or code message on the Google Home app?

  • what is the color led on your Google Nest Home mini when you ask for videos?

I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Manuel
