Google Home Mini (2018) Microphone Input Not Detected

MattKee

Hi, previously, I was able to use my Google Home Mini (GHM) as both a speaker and microphone for various messaging apps and web conferencing tools (e.g. Google Meet, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, Viber, WhatsApp). For iOS, if audio was played through the GHM, it would automatically select the GHM as the microphone as well. For MacOS/Windows, I could select the GHM as both output (speaker) and input (microphone).

However, without any changes to my settings, I am now unable to find the GHM as input. For iOS, it plays the sound but will instead use the phone microphone regardless of output. For MacOS/Windows, I can no longer select it as input under the apps, tools or settings.

No hardware issues; hot mic is on and responds to queries.

Fixes tried: software reboot, power cycling, device hard reset, unpair/forget, uninstall, delete app, reinstall new user.

For your kind assistance please, thanks!

Hi MattKee,

That certainly hasn’t been easy for you — thank you for letting us know that it’s working before and for us to narrow things down, let me ask a few questions.

  • How are your devices connected to each other? Is it through Bluetooth?
  • When did the concern start?
  • Which device have you tried doing the hard reset?
  • Are the hard reset steps the same as what you see in this link?
  • Updates for iOS and MacOS/Windows devices?
  • Are all devices on the same Wi-Fi network?

It would help a lot if you could try other devices to connect with your Google Home Mini.

Looking forward to your response.

Best,

Dan

Hi, Dan_A, Juni, thanks for the revert and follow-up. Please see my responses below:

  • How are your devices connected to each other? Is it through Bluetooth?

Yes, the GHM is paired through Bluetooth to my phone (iOS) and laptops (Windows/MacOS).

  • When did the concern start?

I took a Zoom call through my Windows laptop and I could no longer select the GHM as the microphone. I had taken a call through the same device on the same network two days prior and it worked fine.

  • Which device have you tried doing the hard reset?

Performed a hard reset on the Google Home Mini (1st Gen).

  • Are the hard reset steps the same as what you see in this link?

Yes, followed the steps successfully.

  • Updates for iOS and MacOS/Windows devices?

Running on the latest iOS, Big Sur and Windows 11.

  • Are all devices on the same Wi-Fi network?

Yes, primarily used on the same network. Tried on 2 other networks as well.

  • It would help a lot if you could try other devices to connect with your Google Home Mini.

Tried GHM for Meet and Zoom on colleagues' Windows and MacOS laptops, same results. They can only use it for output but can't detect as a microphone.

Hi MattKee23,

Thanks for the details you’ve shared, and sorry for the delay. Could you also provide us with the latest firmware version of your Google Home Mini? Check out the steps below on how to get it.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Juni
