Google Home Mini connection problems

I have a Google Home Mini (Gen I, I think). It has been working fine. I just today installed a new Arris G36 modem/router with my Xfinity internet, using the 2.4 GHz setup.

I have done 2 factory resets of the mini. I have tried adding it as a new device to my Google Home app, I’ve tried setting it up as it already was shown in the app. No matter what, it does not connect.

I also have a Lenovo speaker and it works fine with the new router. In the setup process, it asked and I agreed to use the password I entered for future devices.

Anyone have any words of advice? Other than doing more factory resets, which seems kind of pointless. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong in the app (yes, it’s the current version).

Thanks in advance.

Hit factory reset, then unplug it!   Shut down your router then restart it. Remove the devise from the google app as well. Clear your browser. Once the router is up and running, plug the devise near your router. Try connecting again through the google home app..  I had to do this a few times.   The problem was the router and I did not uninstall the devise from the App. Worked for me, hope it’s works for you!

Thank you anyway. I already did the factory reset twice, which involves unplugging and plugging it back in more than 10 times! I’m not going to shut down my router —I literally just turned it on. I’m giving up and bought an Amazon Echo dot for a very good price. I’ll trash this mini or give it away.

Hey there,

MimiDonna, thanks for the help.

Sk8pics, don't give up on it yet. What message are you getting when connecting your Google Home Mini to your network? Since you're using an IOS, make sure to turn on Local network access for the Google Home app on your phone settings. Here's how: Privacy > Local Network > Google Home app. Give these additional steps a try:

  • Go to iOS Settings> Wi-Fi.
  • Connect to the Wi-Fi network that matches the device they're setting up.
  • Look for something like GoogleHomeXXXX.k, GoogleHomeXXXX.o, or GoogleHomeXXXX.p.
  • Navigate back to the Google Home app. The device should now be detected.
  • Start setting up your device.
  • If the issue persists, use a mobile hotspot to set up your devices (To isolate the issue).

Hope this helps.

Best,
Alex

Hello Alex,

Thank you for trying to help. I actually tried the steps you described, except for the mobile hotspot. It just did not work. The app would find the device but still think it was on the old network. This was in spite of multiple factory resets, which were quite tedious. So I did give up!

I've purchased and received an Echo Dot which set itself up in approximately 3 minutes and works fine. So, I am giving my mini to a friend, and hopefully it will work fine for her, since it will be totally new in her network.

Thank you again!
