Google Home/Nest Mini - Internet connectivity

Hi,
I have just upgraded my router to a WiFi 6 (ax) model. I understand that the nest/home mini devices operate to WiFi 5 (ac) standard but the router supports this too.

Since the upgrade, my 2nd gen and 1st gen minis have been disconnecting from the internet on a daily basis. When looking at my router connections, I see that the devices are connected to the wifi network, just not the internet. I don't have any problem with any other device. The only way I can get the devices to reconnect is to unplug them and plug them back in. They'll then work for a bit and then disconnect from the internet.

Incidentally, if I have a mini speaker connected to my wifi repeater (WiFi 5 standard), they stay connected to the internet.

I thought this was only an issue with the 1st Gen Home Mini so upgraded this to the 2nd Gen Nest Mini and still get the same issue.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing the internet disconnect on the mini speakers? Is there a fix for this issue?

Router: FRITZ!Box 7530 AX
Dual Band, 1 SSID, WIFI 6 Capable, Mesh Master

Repeater: Fritz!Repeater 3000
Dual Band, 1 SSID, WIFI 5 Capable, Mesh

Hi plod_along,

I'm sorry that you're having trouble with the connectivity after upgrading to a Wi-Fi 6(ax) model ― let's check it out. How often does the disconnect happen? Does your router have a dual band feature or if you could check, does it have a band steering function? Which band are your Nest speakers connected to? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops. Restarting your phone might also help. Tell us how it goes.

Best,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your help.

In answer to your questions…

How often does the disconnect happen?

It’s sporadic. Sometimes it’s disconnected by the afternoon, sometimes the next day, sometimes it’s a few days. The problem is, the issue goes unnoticed until you say “OK Google”.

Does your router have a dual band feature or if you could check, does it have a band steering function?

Yes it operates on both 2.4 and 5Ghz and they both broadcast using the same SSID and devices connect to whichever band it finds best. The router doesn’t appear to have the option of steering a device to a particular band. There is the option of giving different SSIDs for each band (which I want to avoid for seamless switching on other devices) and also an option for changing the 2.4Ghz band to 802.11g+n rather than 802.11g+n+ax

Which band are your Nest speakers connected to?

At present, they are all connected to the 5Ghz band. I’ll keep an eye on them to see if switching to the 2.4Ghz band is causing the issue.

As for your your suggestion of restarting devices sequentially, I have previously tried unplugging the router for a minute or so and plugging back in. Following this, the Nest/Home mini devices stay unconnected so these were unplugged and plugged back in. It’s only really when the nest minis are powered off/on that they reconnect.
I’ve tried resetting to factory settings on one device but this disconnected the following day.

Hi plod_along,

Apologies for the delayed response. I wanted to check if you have tried monitoring the connection on your Nest Mini when on the 2.4 GHz? The reason for this is because your Nest Mini relies heavily on your connection to function. If the band steering is active, then your phone where the Google Home app is could switch connections depending which is stronger at that specific moment. Making it possible for your Nest Mini or Google Home Mini to lose its connection to Wi-Fi. Nest speakers require a stable connection for it to work properly. How about we try this: could you use a second phone so that we can monitor. Two phones are needed for this to work. 1 phone is for the set up and the 2nd phone is where you connect to via hotspot, instead of connecting to Wi-Fi.

Tell us how it goes.

Regards,

Dan

Hi Dan. I’m not quite sure what you would like me to do…

Are you saying to connect the nest minis to phone hotspot instead of WiFi, then move around the home to see how the minis behave when there are changes in connection?

Hi plod_along,

Thanks for responding. Yes, that's right. Please be mindful that when you try to connect it via hotspot, you will need to have 2 separate phones-- one is the set up device and the other one will serve as a router/internet provider. As soon as everything is set up, monitor its behavior and see if this would make any changes on its behavior.
