Google Home Voice Command Issue: Room-Specific Lights Controlling Entire House

asantodo

This afternoon, I encountered an issue where voice commands issued to my Google Home device in a specific room (e.g., "turn off the lights") resulted in all lights in the entire house turning off, rather than just the lights in that room. The same behavior occurred when attempting to turn lights on, activating all lights in the house.

I've already verified that all lights and Google Home devices are correctly assigned to their respective rooms within the Google Home app. Despite this, the voice commands are behaving as if no room context is being applied. The Google Home app still functions correctly for individual light and room control.

I've noticed several recent discussions on the r/googlehome subreddit indicating that other users are experiencing similar issues, suggesting this may be a widespread bug. I wanted to bring this to your attention for investigation.

Try Reconnecting the app to Google Home in Works with Google (if applicable: I don't know what happens with Thread)

By the way, here's an alternative way to control your devices...

Same issue here. Started earlier today. If I try to designate separate room. "Hey google, turn on bedroom lights." I get reply that the lights haven't been set up yet. If I just say turn on the lights it replies "turning on 4 lights" which turns on 2 bdrm and 2 lvg room. App on phone shows lights offline.

Same here, since yesterday same issue

You guys should say what country you live in. Just incase it's a regional problem.

I live in Australia and everything is working as it should.

I live in Europe

I actually came across this issue 5 minutes ago, but after Reconnecting the Smart Life app to Google Home everything is sweet again.

I had nothing but trouble with Google.  I started with a nest, added a hub, then another nest.  The first one seemed fine.  When I added the hub I had a few glitches, but it seemed it was going to iron out.  After the second nest (3rd device) it was never the same.  I tried customer service.  I tried here.  Nothing ever worked.  My hub would shut itself down randomly.  My nests would answer for each other.  Lights would turn off in the wrong rooms.  Music would play in the wrong rooms.  It was a disaster.  After trying everything that CS and the community claimed were fixed to these problems, after almost 2 years I gave up.  I've now had Alexa for about 18 months and I love it.  I don't have a hub, but I have two dots.  One is in my LR and one in my BR.  They're enough.  I use different names for them, so there's no way they can think I'm talking to one instead of the other.  I have all sorts of routines and alarms for them and don't even use my alarm clock any longer.  The best thing I did was to toss my Google and switch.  I threatened to do this for over a year, and couldn't get any help from Google.  I'm not a big Amazon fan, but I'm definitely not regretting this decision.

Hi there,

Thanks for contacting this community! I definitely understand the frustration you're experiencing with your Google Home. It's confusing when your voice commands aren't respecting the room context, especially since you've already gone through the effort of meticulously verifying all your device assignments in the Google Home app. It sounds like the commands should be working as expected, but even then, "turn off the lights" ends up affecting your entire house instead of just the intended room. Don't worry, I'm here to help you figure this out!

To provide you with the most accurate troubleshooting steps, I'd like to ask you some questions.

  • What is the make and model of your light?
  • What is the name of their light?
    • For example, in the room named 'Bedroom', is there a light named 'Bedroom Light' too?
  • Are your lights also showing offline in the Google Home app?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps that could help you get things working again.

  • Make sure your mobile device, your Google Home device, and your smart light bulbs are all on the same Wi-Fi network. If you use a bridge, also check the Wi-Fi network of the bridge.
  • Make sure your mobile device and your Google Home device are linked to the same Google Account.
  • Say the voice command, “Hey Google, sync all devices."
  • Rename your light bulb.
    • Remove the room name from the light name. For example, use “Desk Light” instead of “Bedroom Desk Light.”
    • Remove numbers and special characters from the light name. For example, use “Favorite Light” instead of “The #1 Light.”
    • Make all bulb names unique. For example, use “Reading Light and TV Light” instead of “Right Sofa Light” and “Left Sofa Light.”

Please reply back with this information so I can assist you further.

Best regards,
Eduardo

Um, yeah.  I already knew how to do this sort of stuff.  I'm not an idiot.  I went through everything with you people before.  Google sucks, which you just proved by ignoring most of my post which said I trashed my Google stuff and now have Echo.  That's right.  I didn't give it away or sell it.  I didn't want to give my problems to anyone else.  I hated to do it, but they went in the trash because that's where Google belongs.  When I bought my most recent phone they tried to get me to get a Google phone. My answer wasn't just no, it was hell no.
