Google Home drops wifi and cannot reconnect

Problem: random dropping of connection to Internet of my Google Home unit, which has until recently  (last 2 months) behaved impeccably. Reconnection requires a powerdown/restart of the unit.

And I'll try to head off some of the likely questions now:

No, I have not changed any network configurations, router details, location of units, etc etc. No new units added, no replacements etc. The Home unit connects to wifi provided by a dedicated wireless router that sits next to it - less than 30cm away - with nothing blocking signal. The router is used solely to provide connectivity for the Home unit and a Raspberry Pi unit - during Home dropouts the Pi remains connected and fully functional. No errors are logged in the router. No other devices use the channel provided by the router.

The router is connected to the wider network via 1GB ethernet cable, not wireless. There is no evidence of a stronger signal competing in the area where the units are situated.

I have tried resetting, deleting and reinstalling the Home unit. I have tried running the unit on 2.6Ghz and 5Ghz channels. These have not resolved the issue.

I have rebooted the router on several occasions - when I do so the Home unit reconnects as expected. It is only when the Home unit drops out that it becomes necessary to powerdown and restart the unit.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I'd be very grateful - right now I am heading to the conclusion that the Home unit is faulty, but I do not know what level of diagnostics can be run against it (minimal, I suspect!)

Many thanks,

When you say dropping of the connection to internet, what happens with the unit? Does it respond 'hold on whilst I get connected to Wi-Fi' when you say the wake words?

What is the model of the wireless router

Hi, thanks for getting back. I guess I should have been more precise in describing the symptoms - I should have said "Drops connection to my local network, through which it connects to the Internet". Response varies depending on the circumstances. For example, if I am playing music via Spotify/Prime etc,  the unit provides no response at all, but cannot reconnect even if the app is restarted (app reverts to phone speakers and continues to function) and the device manually reselected. At other times, for example direct questions like "Hey Google what's the time?" results in the "Hold on" message, but no connection ever happens until a reboot. Router is a BT SmartHub2 with the modem disabled so only the WiFi router functions are active.

Thanks J

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help here, Biggsyboi.

dorsetbod, thanks for reaching out and letting us know about your Google Home connectivity concern. We'll work together to identify the cause of the problem and find a solution. If possible, could you try to use another network and observe if it makes a difference?

I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Juni
