Google Home playing podcasts in reverse order

kitch66uk
Community Member

A few months ago my Google Homes started playing podcasts in reverse order.  They play in newest to oldest order.  If I ask them to play the next podcast episode they play the next oldest one.  Asking for the previous podcast they play the next newest.  This happens on all podcasts on all my Home devices but it doesn't happen on the Google Podcasts App on my phone.

I have the same issue as kitch66UK. I saw a previous thread with the same issue in this nest community a few months ago where several people were asked to fill out forms.  However, there was no resolution when the thread was closed. What’s the point of the forms then? This is extremely frustrating.

Hi everyone,

I know how it feels when something isn’t working the way it should. Let’s further look into it. Try doing these troubleshooting steps:

  • Open the Google Home app > Devices > Tap on one Google Home device > Settings > Remove device > Remove.
  • In the Devices tab, scroll down to the bottom and look for the Google Home device you removed > Tap on it > Add to a room.
  • Try to play a podcast again. If the same behavior happens, try asking Google Assistant on your phone to play a podcast and see how it goes.

Kind regards,
Alex

Thanks Alex_S but I tried all the steps you mentioned and my nest still plays podcast episodes in reverse order. I then took the additional step of resetting the device and it didn’t fix the problem. What else might you suggest?

Hi PB2,

We appreciate you doing all those steps. Just to confirm, does the Google Assistant on your phone exhibit the same behavior? What if you use the command: “Listen to the latest episode of  <podcast title>."?

Sincerely,
Alex

Hi Alex, my previous emails were already related to my use of voice commands (same command as you suggested) to my Nest which is powered by Google Assistant.

Hi there,

Thanks for the update. We wanted to isolate if the issue only happens on Google Home/Nest speakers or displays. Kindly use the Google Assistant on your phone and command it to play the podcast. If you don’t have Google Assistant, you can install it from the Play Store.

Regards,
Alex

Hi Alex, I used the Voice Command on Google Assistant on my iPhone and it exhibited the exact same behavior as I described earlier.

Hello folks,

Thanks for responding to this thread.

We're sorry about this experience. Could you please provide the list of podcasts you're having issues with? Also, could anyone here send a short video clip of the exact issue you're experiencing so we can investigate on it further?

Looking forward to your responses.

Best,

Princess

All podcasts

Press forward and it goes to the previous episode. Press back and it goes to the next episode. I think this has been pretty clearly explained without a video being required for you to understand what is happening

Sorry but we have all done as requested and filled out the forms and explained the problem so it should now be on Google to investigate the causes

It affects all podcasts I play these include:-

Whartson Hall

How We Roll Podcast

The Grognard Files

Breakfast in the Ruins

In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg

Friday Night Comedy from BBC Radio 4

I've tried this with the Google Assistant on my Android phone and it works as expected.  On my Google Home asking for the next podcast results in the behaviour described in the first post of this thread.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the information you’ve shared. Could you provide us with the Nest speaker or display model we are working with? We also need the device firmware version. Check out the steps below on how to get it.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Tap your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.
