Google Home slow to respond

Axon54
Community Member

Over the last 2 weeks my Google Home is very slow to respond. It sits and the lights spin after a command and many times it does not execute the command. Also, when I tell it to play a radio station it plays it on a nest speaker in another room. I have rebooted it by unplugging several times plus 2 factory resets and no change.

Hi everyone,

Sorry to hear about the slow responses from your Google Nest speakers. If you're currently experiencing this, here are some things you should check first:

  • Check the distance of the Nest speaker-- it should be within range from the router or network preferably within 15-20 feet for a good and stable connection.
  • Make sure that there are no other devices or appliances that may interfere with the connection. For example: a TV, microwave oven, or other electronic device.

Once you've checked on those, give these troubleshooting steps a try:

  1. Unplug your Google Nest speaker and plug it back in after a few minutes. It may also be helpful to unplug your router to refresh its network settings and to avoid congestion on the network.
  2. If that doesn't do the trick, perform a complete reset and follow the prompts to set up.

If you don't see improvement after performing the steps above, please give us a call or chat via this link: https://bit.ly/3adTfGB. We'll be happy to look into this further!

No. You're wrong. Do you think Google doesn't know there's an issue? Of course they do. Do you think they are going to send out a fix? Of course you don't. Buy a newer model. I would love to be wrong, but I'm exactly right.

You are completely wrong; this is happening in all my second-generation devices.

That doesn't make me completely wrong. I wasn't aware it was also happening to Gen 2's. But other than that you're in the same boat as the Gen 1's. You can pray for a fix, but you'll never see one.  We both know that's true. Don't hate the messenger.

Stop trying to tell me if my device is ok or not. I’m not looking for arguments but my screen goes total white and don’t respond to commands. Is update and  I have the  latest generation. Is nothing is wrong with it the what the heck is going on because wasn’t like that for the 1st year.

If they want to discontinue a device, also fine, if they specify beforehand, so we can choose. But that is not the case here either.

Sadly you haven't read the thread completely. The same issue is happening on Gen2 devices as well, like mine Gen2 hub.

  1. Correct. This doesn't have anything to do with old or new Google devices. Mine's, except the Google Home Max, are new gen devices.

You're correct! I didn't know about Gen 2 devices. However that doesn't change anything. I would love for Google or someone else to prove me wrong & show me what jackass I am. But we all know that won't happen. Buy the latest model & enjoy it while Google let's you 😌

Built in obsolescence in 2 years!? Ethical? Or BS? Sure let’s all buy new devices TVs , computers etc every 2 years!? Come on!

Who said obsolete? Not me. But if you don't like what you've got... Yep. That's right. Pay up.

Please, tone it down. There's an issue with Google Home, that is clear. It appeared a few month ago and it is intermittent... Gen 1 or Gen 2 doesn't seem to matter. The complete blockage that I was experiencing a few month ago hasn't reproduced in a long time.

Maybe with Matter things will get better.

Voice control still is in its infancy. We're pioneers in that sense. As more people jump on, hiccups will arise. And they'll get fixed.

Fortunately our devices are relatively inexpensive. Compared to Sonos, which now has gen 1 and gen 2 incompatible (different apps), and every device $500+, were sitting pretty.

No one was more pleased than I was for nearly 2 years with my Google Home. Then I bought 2 minis last year flawless performance then all hell broke loose and when I asked for Google customer service to help I got nothing. Ignored. Told to reboot or buy a new router. This isn’t about something in its infancy because it all worked brilliantly for a long time. It’s about no support and no answers. One cannot help but wonder if it’s intentional. That’s  all I’m saying. I will not support a company that forces me to buy new devices every 2 years but that's me.

There is no valid issue with your Gen 1 or 2 device. Voice control works fine on all Google devices when they are new. You will never see an official fix from Google. If you have a newer Google Home Device & it's slow, then you're issue is singled out.  No need to get angry folks. I promise the only fix is to buy the latest model.

I moved from amazon Alexa to google, for YouTube native compatibility. Compared to google voice control Alexa is crazy fast. Lights turn on faster, request get answered instantly, there is no comparison anymore, my only regret is a that i choose Google over Amazon for my smart home, and now I am stuck with these unresponsive devices.

Out of no where, both my google home devices (mini and standard) started working as intended. I will update if that changes. I would like to know if anyone else has had similar luck.

My Gen 1 Google Nest Hub (smart display) (or whatever the fkcu they want to call it) Is now working again. Its been working for like three whole days now.  Google only decided to fix it because of the Nasty Posts I was making.  I exposed them!! and out of sheer fear of public retaliation they issued the fix. You are all welcome. Hopefully google doesn't try to pull this again. I'm hoping Samsung will get on the ball with Bixby. I'm sick of Siri, Google & Alexa.  & Why the fcku did MS drop Cortana so hard. This world is so messed up.

One if my Gen1 Google Home seems to be working like normal now.  The other one is still slow on the first activity, so I guess as soon as it picks up the update, it will be fixed.  About freaking time they issued a fix for these.  Knock on wood it's fixed for good!  Thanks for pushing the issue and getting their attention.  It takes a freaking village to push sometimes and it looks like it paid off.

Both devices of mine are working now as well. Gee what a coincidence! Let’s see if it stays that way

Both Nest Minis stopped working correctly a week after the last post. Lag is ridiculous on commands and I speak a command to one mini and the other which is 2 rooms over responds. It has become a joke in our house. The biggest joke is the fact that countless people have this same problem in this forum and across the internet but Google support remains invisible. Terrible terrible company.

Not yet. Mine still has the lag. Happy for you, though. Thanks for the update.

I started experiencing this very same issue a week or so ago. Absolutely nothing has changed in the house or modem location etc so not sure what's going on. Any updates from Google on what's the issue give how many peolhave indicated the same concern and that the suggested troubleshooting they offered did little to solve the issue?

7/1/2022 - Same thing is happening to me too, I have 9 Google Home Mini and they had no issue until few weeks ago which is so frustrating, responding to voice command takes much longer and eventually lagging and chopped voice from Mini. What is going on ?

KBinPA

I wish we knew.  Mine now when I set a timer in the kitchen responds in the upstairs (tucked at the front of the house) bedroom.  It is beyond frustrating, especially since when I first got them I told everyone how great they were and a few bought them!

There's a noticeable update as of 7/1. When swiping up it shows the icons for Y.Tube, Spotify & few other icons. However, the lag still persists. It randomly starts behaving like normal from time to time.

Exactly. Mine worked for about 5 days and suddenly like an hour ago, the problem reappeared. Had to reboot the router and started working again. Lets see how long it takes for the problem to reappear.

Yes,  many of us have tried these attempted fixes and they didn't work for any of us.  I've even swapped our WiFi AP units and it doesn't fix the Google Home units.  If you reboot everything, it works for an hour or so and then goes back to being really slow on the first event/question you ask it.

This happens on Generation 1 and Generation 2 Google Home devices - including the Google minis so it's not a specific device or WiFi AP device.  It's got to be the software or the Google backend.
