Google Nest Speakers not playing music on specified speaker

Ashloi
Community Member

Evening community 😁

I have 3 nest mini speakers in different rooms in the house - Kitchen, Office and Living Room. Each are part of the same household and have rooms assigned on the Google Home app.

Until about a few weeks ago, I used to be able to use a voice command "Play music on the [Room] speaker", and music would play on that speaker, regardless of where I am in the house. Now, that voice command does not work ("Sorry, I don't understand") and I have to either be in the same room as the speaker or use my phone to manually cast audio.

Has anybody else experienced a similar issue and able to offer any help with this? I've tried resetting all devices and reconnecting to WiFi, to no avail. I'm sick to the back teeth of accidentally playing the theme from "The Office". 🤣

Thanks

Hey folks,

We got your forms. We also raise the issue with the team and need help with the feedback reports. Please make sure to replicate the issue first before sending feedback on your speakers. To send feedback just say, "Hey Google, send feedback," followed by the keywords: "GHT3 Unable to play music on a speaker group." Visit this link for more steps.

Let me know once done.

Cheers,

Muddi

Ok I have just done that twice.

The first was whilst it was already casting music from an app. The second feedback was after I had just given a Mini speaker a play radio on Chromecast command.

I have also submitted the form.

The issue started on 13th February. Since then asking any speaker or my phone to play music or radio on a Chromecast fails. I get a response of "I don't understand" or "do you want to play radio" or just no response. In all cases the music is not played on the Chromecast. I can use my usual music apps to cast to the same Chromecast. It's only  when I speak to request the cast.

Chromecast firmware 1.56.281627

I am in the UK , if that's relevant.

Hey folks,

Just a quick update. I've duplicated this thread to a similar trending issue on this link. Our team is looking into this issue at hand and I suggest following the main thread for updates. By the way, I appreciate those users who submitted the form.

Also, please make sure to send feedback on your devices by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback." followed by the keywords: GHT3 Unable to play music on a speaker group.

Cheers,

Muddi

Of course I've done that. My speaker group is several years old.

When it took a vacation, I rebooted, then started whole system over again. Also tried  deleting speaker group.

The system obviously worked because my station would go through streaming intro then stop. Also I could play Spotify from my phone on speaker group.

Obviously there's a flaw somewhere.

I nearly always do that so I (hopefully)don't get the wrong thing or "I don't understand".

If it's not working being more specific doesn't work any better.

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

Our team is already aware of this and working toward a resolution. You can help expedite issue resolution by submitting feedback using your Nest speakers or displays. Check out the steps below for guidance.

Step One: Turn on device reports

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Chromecast, or speaker or display.
  2.  Open the Google Home appJuni_0-1677105862012.png.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right corner of the screen, tap Settings then Recognition & sharing.
  5. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Step Two: Share your feedback

  1. Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:
  2. “Send feedback”
  3. Use the keyword “GHT3 Unable to play music on a speaker group"

Juni

When I ask google to play music in all speakers, her reply is  “ I don’t understand “. It used to work but not anymore. I do have a setting for GROUP (all speakers)

Here’s why..

it’s nothing at your end…Goggle has pushed firmware to disable it.

Any workarounds to play all speakers with one command ?

Old news. Although Google woke IT-persons can't keep things working you should at least read your posts.

Hello,

I am having an issue similar to this one: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/google-home-saying-i-don-t-understand-w...

When I try to play to my speaker group (called Speakers) I get the response "Sorry I didn't understand"

I have two Home Minis and a original  Google Home.

The three speakers are all running firmware 324896 with cast firmware 1.56.324896

Casting to the the group of devices works as expected, it just fails when using voice commands. This stopped around last Tuesday (2-14-2023 - Happy Valentines Day).

Troubleshooting steps I have done:

- Rebooted all three Google Homes

- Deleted the speaker group and re-created it.

Not sure what else I can do to fix this issue. Any assistance is appreciated.

Same for me. Again Google did something that ruined automation. My Apple Home pod do not have these problems at all. It is nice to have some automation by Google when you have to play music like it is 2007.

Same here... Even if I tap on "Play Music" button under speakers & tvs. Doesn't seem to understand, just shows google results.

Rob70

Yep same here but I can do it manually through the home app 🤷‍♂️ which is a pain in the axxe.

But if I say play new through group it works which makes me think it’s something to do with Tunein.

Thoughts??

Thanks for spreading the word. I use YouTube music as my default music just to add another detail. Telling a Google Home to play music on the speaker group has worked for years as well.

Rob70

This was from Google

Thanks for the DM. Our team is aware of what's happening and they're already investigating this. While waiting for a fix, you could try our workaround. Give these steps a whirl:

1. Give this command to one of your Google Nest speakers: "Hey Google, play (name of radio station)".
2. Once the station starts playing, say: "Hey Google, transfer to (speaker group's name)".

This does indeed work, I am glad Google is aware. Thank you again.

Just out of interest does anyone else’s radio cut out multiple times when on group speakers?

Some days it’s fine and others it cuts out multiple times but rarely on a single speaker.

I have not had that issue

Yeah I went into detail with google last night with it and they were already aware with the problem 👍

Hi Juni,

The fix doesn't appear to have fixed my issue. To confirm, the issue I was having was playing music on a specified speaker, not speaker group, with the following command:

"Play music on office / kitchen / living room speaker"

All of which respond with "Sorry, I don't understand".

I am able to get around this by specifying the music service (Spotify) - however, I only have one music service connected to my Home account. This command worked until January and stopped.

Many thanks

Ash
