Google Nest Hub won't connect to WiFi.

HisNerdship
Community Member

I see many 'fixes' for this problem, but none have worked.  I moved home recently and cannot get my Nest Hub to connect to the new router.  Every other device in the house (2 x Windows PCs, 1 Mac Pro, 1 Pixel 5 phone and a google Nest Mini) does connect, suggesting there is a problem with the Nest Hub.

I have done four factory resets on the Nest Hub, and gone countless times through the setup process on the Google Home app.  The Pixel detects the Hub, reads the QR code, and connects to it.  But it always fails at the Connecting to Wi-Fi stage, with the message "NestHubxxx could not connect to <router> - please check your password".  Nothing wrong with the password - it worked for everything else, including the Mini.

Unfortunately my son bought it for me online, direct from Google, so there is nowhere I can take it back to.  And Google make it VERY AWKWARD to get any help.  All the online help tells me to do what I have done many, many times already.  I am sick of this and want it fixed, or get a refund or replacement, but where do I go?

I found a fix.  I had to phone Google in the US, but the guy there got me over the line.

My router is dual band, and in all my previous attempts my phone (containing the Google Home app) was connected to the 5G band.  The techie at Google told me to do a factory reset, then connect it to the 2.4G band.   I ran the Home app again and connected the Hub successfully.

Switching the Hub off and on again automatically connected it to the default 5G band.  Then switched my phone back to 5G.  All seems to be working now.

ME too, plus I took Nest Hub to friend's house where I was able to connect OK
returned home and still get "unable to connect"
Are Nest Hub and new BT internet incompatible?

Nah, I'm in Australia.  It is a problem with the device itself.  I see an answer to an identical problem is re-use the same SSID and password as the previous router.  What on earth is Google playing at?

Hello HisNerdship,

Thank you for reaching out and providing an update. I am very glad to hear that your Google Nest Hub is working again!

Hello OldEric, are you still encountering this issue? Please keep me updated, we are here to help!

Hi there,

my google home won't connect to my new wifi, please help

Hi...

I wanna help you but don't know if I can...

I had the same problem... I've tried everything reset everything. Change from 2.4 to 5.

I realized that it is not router and it is not even nest hub. That's my internet provider that installed a new firewall that prevent my nest hub from connecting.

So what I did:

I connect my laptop direct to the lan and turned on the Hotspot.

Connect both mobile phone and try to connect nest hub via Google home. No connection so I understood that's not router problem.

Then I installed a VPN app on laptop and tried to share this VPN from internet and sharing setting with labtop wifi.

And then connect my mobile and tried to connect nest hub to labtop via home app on phone.

Luckily it is connected and set up everything and after that wait for 10 minutes to everything sattel in nest hub.

Disconnected everything.

Turn the router on and connect phone to router and on the phone go to settings of the nest hub and then device information and push forget wifi and then start to set up wifi (router) from main meno on home app.

Everything is working.

I hope this works for everyone who struggles for many days

And let me know if it helped.

hi Frances, I moved to Australia recently n my hub worked ok for a few days before it went catatonic 1 week ago. Can  you help me?

I'm reachable at #########

Hi there,

What do you need to factory reset, your phone or the hub? How do you connect it to a 2.4G band?

What did you do a factory reset on? The phone? Router? Hub?

This worked for me too!  Thank you!!!!

This band changing doesn't  work for me  I still get the "can't  connect to wifi " message.

Connection google Nest to wi.fi

Thanks a lot for providing this solution, I almost  buy a new nest hub...

There should be a small button somewhere on the device - check the handbook if you can't find it.  Hold it down for about 15 secs, or until it makes a beep/changes colour etc.  It should now be factory reset.

I don't know what your phone and router are but in the WiFi Settings you should be able to 'see' your router, which will have two names if it is dual-band.

Another thing I found, when my google Chromecast stopped working.  It seems that if you are using the 5G band, the stronger signal from the 2.4G band can 'hide' the 5G one.  Try disconnecting the 2.4G entry in your phone Settings, so only the 5G one is there.  This worked for me with the Chromecast.

I call BS!! I’ve tried EVERYTHING here.. 2.4G, 5G reset everything numerous times… absolutely everything I’ve read… it’s was connected for the first couple hours and I moved it and now it Will never connect again!!? Google support is Useless… they know nothing… want me to try try and get into my router which is my cable provider and change settings?? I’m getting over 50 mbps and anything else connects Flawlessly!!! I’m not mucking with my router for this goofy piece of Google garbage with 100 apps for everything you want to do??!! Has anyone found an actual WORKING SOLUTION???

I know google are very unpleasant to deal with.  It was only when I started demanding a refund that I was given a US no to call (I am in Australia).  That did actually fix it, but then I got the same problem with the Chromecast.  Annoying that things are working fine and next day they stop, and you get a useless message like 'Something went wrong'.  Google are like the public service - big enough to not care.
But the following combination did eventually work on all of them:

  • Factory reset the device
  • Switch off the router for about 10 mins, then restart
  • Connect your phone to the other band, e.g 5G to 2.4G
  • Because 2.4G has better penetration around the house than 5G, it seems to 'hide' the 5G, so disconnect your phone from the 2.4G.  Not sure if this is factually correct, but doing this worked once when my Home Mini died on me.

I tried All those things… to no avail… my Google chromecast connected (brand new also out of box)or Anything else for that matter connect to my wifi Flawlessly. I tried Every single thing you mentioned there More than once for over three days now… Spent over four hours with Google support. They couldn’t get it working… Even tried it in unison with my IPad and a Hotspot… I mean Everything here… Have demanded a refund which they are super hesitant to even give the whopping 69$ I paid for the Nest Hub on sale… They’re saying they may send a replacement if they feel I’ve tried enough of their so called ‘solutions’ that aren’t working..

I still don’t understand this thing.. It worked perfectly at first and connected to my Wifi No problem? Now Absolutely Nothing I do will make it work?! Nothing?! If anyone has any insight other than what has already been said, I would really appreciate it!!

I just got a refurbished Home Hub, I connected to the WiFi first time, no problem. I wanted to restart the device, Google Assistant told me I could take the power cord out for 1 min and reboot the device. When turning back on, it took me back to the initial Setup screen, I sighed in disappointment and went through the entire process again. I cannot reconnect to the WiFi, I've tried 2.4GHz, 5G, factory resetting, restarting router, everything short of returning the item for a refund, please assist.

Our Nest doorbell video shows on our Google Hub in response to”Hey Google” query.  We were able to also see the video on our i-pad and Google 3 phone, but now can’t.

Thanks Jake, but I resolved the initial issue about which I started this post (with a google Home Nest) but have had others since. Next off the blocks was my Chromecast which I never did get working.  I am now in an Airbnb where my Pixel 5 phone will connect to Wi-Fi for about 20 secs before dropping back to 4G.  Of course without my phone I cannot connect to any of the Google Home devices.  I won't be here long enough to justify the pain and delay of getting any help.

It's funny that I get these problems only with Google devices.  My daughter has an Apple PC & phone, neither of which have had any issues.  I have a Microsoft Surface PC and a tablet, also both of which remain resolutely connected.

But Jake, I think everyone here has made their point.  Google devices are extremely unreliable, a situation made still worse by the near impossibility of getting useful help (everyone here has tried all the 'solutions' Google provides online).

But yes, you might as well lock this thread.  And thanks for getting back, albeit very lately.

I have exactly same problems...

My guess is this a Known issue with certain Google products. Why they are offloading them at half price and making it ridiculously hard to get any real support with them. Or make it feel like it is something that the consumer has done wrong, when it is All something wrong within their devices… Just creating a bad name for themselves….

I found a solution the the problem i had the same issues as where it will fail to connect to the internet after the setup part where you scan the QR Code it would always fail. After  days of doing different setups and reseting the solution came down to simply using an android phone. Specifically galaxy. When before i was using iphones i did also try different iphones it still didn’t work but i went thru the process on the android phone it works. It seems like google are a bunch of scammers and don’t  actually  provide any solutions that they cause on the app so its most likely a bug that doesnt allow the google wifi and iphones to pair properly so dont use an iphone and try it out. Hope this helps with people struggling with the same problem i had even bought a new wifi in addition to the ones i had  and it still didn’t work on iphone

Question.. so if I don’t have an Android phone, can I get a friends phone to Set this up and hook it up to my wifi? And then use it with my IPhone later???

For me thats a yes i used someone else’s android i just logged in the app with my account. Just used it for the set up the one time.Have been doing everything else on the iphone and works.

I found an alternate fix to this that works… I had purchased a Meshforce wifi network with two booster pods to boost my main network because I have so many smart bulbs and other smart devices. When I hooked that up and established it’s wifi network, my Nest Hub connected to it right away?  Not sure what settings are different within it but I didn’t have to muck around with anything or change anything and I already had this coming, so that worked…

Oh wow… well that sounds great.. But how will that work for me when I have No Android phones in my house? Everything I do runs off of iPhones, and I am going to have to buy an Android phone to get this one device setup? I don’t think so…

After fighting with Google for days emailing them back and forth, they wanted me to go into my router and change settings even! I said NO! Forget it! This is not what I paid for! The device is ordered is supposed to install with my wifi, iPhone , flawless network, no problem no issues with out having to jump through hoops and any judge would find in my favour! Threatened a law suit if they do not help now 😂 They quit arguing now and pretty sure they are about to answer back in my favour later today…

Thanks for the new information about the Android phones.. I can shove that up theirs also…

Thank you for all the interest and ideas to try and help,I've tried many thing except altering the router settings but BT tried changing them for me all to no avail.
HOWEVER I thought I would give it one last go this evening, wiped everything out as many times before then installed G. home on my iphone and as usual got as far as "unable to connect"
Then one more go with old android phone without sim but with internet connection and bluetooth! fail almost before getting going, try again ( I resuse to give up easily) this time VERY-VERY slow but ended up commecting followed by "Updating" about 15 mins blank screen then back to life & more "updating" total about 50 mins several stops when it said "first download G.Home to you phone" ? ? ?  then Nest started up again untill and started to work OK it had forgotten everything but then it has been reset to factory default about 10 times over the weeks.
Was there a problem that Google did not tell me but they have now fixed, although it took a long time to get there it ended up the way it was when I first got it and it set up in about two mins.

SO! good luck & keep trying

I have to agree Kim. One the only main reasons I bought this is because the Google Nest hub supports Home & Away features or location services which Alexa does not anywhere in Canada. My home and away services worked once… Several different ‘techs’ contacted me answering different questions and they are clueless…. Name calling aside, they have absolutely no idea how to fix it or even how it actually works I think. I also wanted to group some lights in my kitchen, and their only solution to do that was to create a bunch of different sub rooms with my kitchen, basically just more rooms named kitchen 1 ,2 , 3, 4 whereas Alexa is simple as pie to create an variation of whatever group you want wherever…
A pure waste of my money the Nest Hub was…

i did the same n asking the same... where do we go for the promised support??

Good luck… support from google was occasionally answering me? I responded to all their questions and everything and now they have disappeared and it’s like I never bought this thing… serves only as an iPad I can talk to that supports no home and away services and won’t control my lights or devices properly… at least Alexa does that…

If having this problem, ensure the Google Home Mini can reach the Google DNS server 8.8.8.8.  I run my own DNS server on my home LAN and block all other DNS servers.  Home Mini would not connect.  When I disabled the firewall rule blocking external DNS, the Home Mini was able to complete setup.
