Google Nest Mini persistent "there's been a glitch"

I have two Nest minis. They intermittently got glitchy a few months back, and about 2 months ago stopped being able to do anything at all. They would respond to their wake words ("ok google"), but would think about it for a while, then respond with one of about three error messages ("something went wrong", "there's been a glitch", etc).

I've been on calls with Google Support (long calls, well-intended, but ultimately unhelpful), emails (same), and done a lot of my own diagnosing. I'm pretty sure the issue is the automatic updates the minis are receiving. I say this, because if I do a factory reset and set the devices up, they work for a short while (less than 1hr), and then become unrespsonsive again. I have clocked this behaviour multiple times.

The fact this is happening on both of the two devices I own seems to support this conclusion - that this is Google breaking its own products with its updates. Which there appears to be literally no way of stopping. If they let me stop their updates, my device would work. But their updates break the devices. This is a dictionary definition of forced obsolescence. Made all the worse by the fact Google won't replace the devices.

I'd love if anyone else has this issue for them to comment - I've got zero desire to purchase a replacement product. And if I do, you can guarantee it won't be a Google product given this experience. Google - if you can step in and sort this I'd appreciate it. I've been buying Google products since your first smartphone, but banging my head against the wall on this one is making me seriously reconsider...

So I found an answer of sorts. It turns out that the devices don't like IPV6. I had this setting enabled by default on my router, but found a thread on reddit suggesting turning it off, and my devices magically started working again.

It's something that's clearly fixable, as the factory-reset devices work properly, whereas once they have their automatic updates they stop working. But as a temporary fix it seem to be holding.

My paired 2nd Gen Nest Mini speakers have been making intermittent glitchy noises for a few weeks and now they won't play BBC Radio 1, World Service, Virgin radio etc. from the ones I asked for and was able to play regularly before. It plays BBC 5 live but won't switch to aforementioned stations after that. The speaker responds by saying that it is playing, the lights stay on for 3-5 seconds, but plays nothing.

I've been burned by a Google pixel phone in the past and I swore not to buy any Google phones, or products for that matter. Only bought the speakers as they were so cheap. Had issues with them initially with the WiFi extender, but once I changed the router, that got resolved. They've worked great for a year until now.

I tired the same through my router settings but it had no effect. It still didn't play those stations.

I have the same issue, but I can’t disable IPV6 since I have Google fiber. Any other advice?

Hi Sethman2024,

Try to change your router’s DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Reboot the router and your Google Nest device, then monitor its behavior.

Warmly,
Alex

I have been having the same issue. I discovered that if I disable and then reenable Google Play Services in my phone, I get about 15 minutes of flawless service immediately

I do need help. I need to understand what interaction between Google home and Google Play services is causing consistent glitches and what the time frame is to fix this bug
