Google Speaker ignoring my commands

Here's my issue. I have a Google Home speaker and a Nest Hub (I don't know which generation), and I set up a speaker group to play music on both of them. I have Pandora set as the primary music app in the Home app. For years this has worked with no problem. I update the Home app when new releases come out. Everything has been good.

While the music is playing, I can give it commands like, "Hey Google, replay", or "Hey Google, pause", or "Hey Google, resume". Every command I had previously given it, it responded to, until about 2 weeks ago.

When I say a command on the Google Home speaker, it waits for my command, then it ignores it. The lights spin on the speaker and it looks like it's going to respond, then it just goes back to what it was doing before. Some commands work, like if I ask it to play a song or an artist, but some it completely ignores. If I say, "Hey Google, who's singing?", it ignores me. The weird thing is that the commands work on the Nest Hub. I've rebooted the speaker multiple times with no change.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Hey, I’ve seen similar weird behavior with Google Home devices acting differently after updates or app changes. Sometimes the issue comes down to how the Google Home app manages device settings or the voice recognition cache for specific devices. It might be worth trying to remove the Google Home speaker from your speaker group, reboot both devices, then re-add it to the group.

Also, double-check that the firmware for your Google Home speaker is up to date, as sometimes new updates fix these quirky voice command bugs.

If you’re into exploring tech fixes or troubleshooting tips beyond smart home stuff, I share some of my finds on my site here — mostly gaming-related but sometimes I cover general tech.

Hope you get this resolved!
