Google home and home mini (1st gen) won't connect to Wi-Fi

Trying to reconnect my two speakers, and they will not connect to the wifi. I can see them, and start the beginning process but as soon as I try to connect them to the wifi I get a pop-up saying they cannot connect. I have done multiple factory resets, phone to airplane mode and back, phone restart, router restart, router firmware update, un installed / reinstalled google home app. I was able to set up chromecasts on the same exact network a few weeks ago. Do I now have two new paperweights?

I recently upgraded my router and I now have wifi6, are these 1st gen devices not compatible with wifi6?

You may already have tried some of these steps but I'll share them here in full!

  1. Make sure your Google Home or Nest device is within 15 - 20 ft (4 - 6 m) of the Wi-Fi router. If you have a dual band router, try to set up your device on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

  2. Make sure Wi-Fi, Location Services and Bluetooth are turned ON on your phone or tablet.

  3. Turn OFF mobile/cellular data.

  4. Reboot your router. Most routers just require that you unplug the power source and then plug it back in to reboot.

  5. Reboot your Google Home or Google Nest device.

  6. Make sure you're using the latest version of the Google Home app, by checking your app store for any updates.

  7. Restart the Google Home app.
  • Android: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the Google Home app.
  • iPhone/iPad: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the Google Home app. On older devices with a home button, double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the Google Home app.
  • Turn Wi-Fi off and on again on your phone or tablet.
  • Reopen the Google Home app.

If none of the steps above help, factory reset the device and then retry setup. Note that this will clear your data from the device and can't be undone. You may also want to try setup using a different phone or tablet if you have one, just to test.

Did all of these a few times. Still nothing from either.

Try this workaround:

  1. Go to the Wi-Fi settings on your mobile device.

  2. Open the list of available Wi-Fi networks and look for an available network with the name “GoogleHomeXXXX" (where XXXX is a random number).

Note: If you previously set up your device and haven't factory reset it since it lost connection to your Wi-Fi network, look for the name of the device that you assigned to it in the list of available networks on your mobile device.

  3. If you can successfully connect to your speaker or display's Wi-Fi network in your Wi-Fi settings, open the Google Home app and try to set up the device.

Hey hesster,

Chiming in - how's your Google Home Mini? Did you manage to connect it to your network?

@David_K: I appreciate your help here!

No, still unable to connect them. Was able to set up two Chromecasts and an echo dot. But no luck with the Google home or mini.

Hey hesster,

Thanks for the update. To eliminate network issue, please setup one of your devices on a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Home or Mini speaker).

Keep us posted.

Hey hesster,

Thanks for trying. When and where did you purchase your device?

So I just set up a 2nd or 3rd gen google home mini. Same network, no issues. Seems to be a 1st gen issue.

They both are 1st gens, they were bought when they were new. Not 100% sure where we bought them.

Hey hesster,

Thanks for that added information. It looks like an issue with those specific speakers. Just an added question: are you using a dual-band router? If yes, what bandwidth are you using (2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz)? What country are you located in?

Hey sorry for the late reply, my router died, so had to get a new one. Seems to be a router issue. My new router (still wifi6) is able to connect them. My previous router was a tplink ax1800, new router is a tplink ax4400. Not sure why the 1800 wouldn't connect.

Hey LeeWill,

Could you tell us when and where you purchased your devices? The welcome tunes and colored lights normally indicate that your device restarted - does it always happen?

@hesster: Thanks for the update. Possible that there's an update on the router and some settings are preventing your speakers from connecting to the old router. Good thing you had your router changed. Enjoy using your speakers!

Hi, it was a Christmas present a couple of years ago so not sure where exactly it was bought from. It’s only started “resetting” since I’ve not been able to connect it the last week. Prior to that, it’s worked with no issues. But it’s happening all the time now, so I have to leave it unplugged until I can fix it.

Hi, I’ve been having the same issue with my 1st gen mini, just since last night. Tried all of the above with no luck. Any more suggestions to try?

There’s also no Google Wi-Fi network showing for it in my iPhone Wi-Fi settings?

Hey LeeWill,

To confirm, did you reset your device before connecting to a mobile hotspot? How many phones/tablets did you use to set up your speaker on hotspot?

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi, yes I reset it before trying to connect to the mobile hotspot. I used my iPhone for the hotspot and an iPad to try and set up the mini. Still no luck. I don’t know if it’s the standard, but just sitting next to it for the last 5 mins, the welcome tune and 4 coloured lights have come on 4 times?
