Google home nest speaker rejects bluetooth connection from MacOS

peppermintdev

I've experienced this exact problem four times at this point. I'll be using my nest home speaker to play audio from my Mac Mini. I am using an external TV monitor for video. In the middle of playing a show, the speaker will disconnect itself. Today this message showed up in the bluetooth menu after it happened.

Every time I've experienced this problem, the only way I am able to fix it is by factory resetting the speaker. Has anyone had a similar experience?

More information:

- I am running MacOS Monterey 12.4

- My speaker model is GXCA6

- This has happened three times in the last month

Hey peppermintdev,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand the feeling when you're having issues with your Google Home/Nest device. Let's dig deeper - when did the issue start? Do you have the same issue when connecting other devices on your speaker via Bluetooth? Does the same thing happen when you're playing music via Bluetooth? Also, how far is your device from the router?

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

The issue started when I moved to a new apartment. Yes, the issue shows up when I try to connect other devices to the speaker. I have not played music from the speaker for an extended time and I haven't experienced a random forced disconnect in the short times I have played music via the speaker. The device is about 10 feet from the router and modem.

I have google home linked devices in another house, which is in another state but belongs to the same home group. Could that perhaps be the issue?

Hey peppermintdev,

Thanks for providing all that information. To confirm, does that mean that you only experience the issue when playing video on your TV? Also, are you trying to use it as an eternal speaker for your MacOS?

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

I'm actually broadcasting to my TV via an HDMI cord from the mac mini. So it's technically disconnecting from the mac mini, not the TV. And yes, it is being used as an external speaker for the mac mini.

Hey peppermintdev,

Got it! We don't recommend using any of our Google Home or Nest speakers and display to be used as an external speaker because it's not fully supported. What we can only guarantee is for it to work with Bluetooth devices to play with music only and not with video.

To further isolate the issue, could you try creating a new home structure then move your speakers that are in one location. Once done, check if that makes any difference.

Keep us posted.

I know this is going to sound entitled and annoying, but you should let your dev team know they should really work on compatibility for use as an external speaker. I paid $200 for two nest home speakers thinking they could be used as external speakers and they basically don't work.

The google assistant is head and shoulders above Siri or Alexa but I may end up getting another speaker because this disconnection experience is so unpleasant. Almost every night while watching a movie, the speaker will randomly disconnect and I'll have to spend 5 minutes factory resetting the speaker while everyone waits around.

Hey peppermintdev,

We understand, and appreciate your feedback.  We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take this as feedback and pass it along to the team. I also suggest that you send feedback using your devices by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback" or by following the steps on this link.

Let me know if I can assist with anything else, otherwise I’ll be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Cheers,
