Google mini still speak when theres no power

Hi.

It happens quite a number of times whereby my Google mini speak "oops theres a problem try again later" but the main issue is, the power on smart power adaptor is off. Meaning the google mini should have no power.

This isn't really a Google question.  There is no battery in the Nest Mini so it's quite impossible that it could be doing anything, let alone responding to queries, when it isn't powered.  Whatever "smart" power switch you have it plugged into is simply not off when you think it is.

I know it's bizarre but this has happened to me twice. The home mini started randomly saying "something went wrong, try again later." Not very frequently but every few days.  It woke me up a couple of times so I started unplugging it at night. I did that by pulling the mini USB out of the device.  Nothing happened for a couple of nights, then one night about 1 a.m. it did the same thing even though it was not connected to the power.

The next day I googled it and only found comments that this is impossible because it doesn't have a battery. I kind of convinced myself I had imagined or dreamt it.

But this morning, the same thing happened again about 5 a.m.  I know I was not dreaming because my roommate heard it too from the next room. And I also know for certain that it was unplugged.

Could there be any other way it could activate even without a battery? Both times it was near other electronic devices (TV or router) - might that be responsible? Or could it possibly store a small enough amount of electrical charge, sufficient to make it speak? Although the voice was just the same as normal and it was quite loud.

If I can't solve this, I'll have to throw it out because I can't let it wake me up every few nights.

Thanks for your advice.

Hey BGman,

Sorry for the late reply, and to hear about the odd experience. Definitely not the most ideal situation. I wanted to reach out and see if you are still running into the trouble with the device speaking when not plugged in? Please let me know, as I would like to look into this issue further for you.

Best regards,

Jake

Thanks Jake.

They mystery was finally resolved.  It wasn't the Google Home Mini. It was a nearby Android TV. I have had the TV for about a year and never used the Google Assistant on it (wrong remote came with the TV), so it never occurred to me that the device would produce the exact same voice.

I blogged about it at https://medium.com/@speakingcentral/can-a-google-home-mini-speak-when-unplugged-3c335e1829d4

Thanks again for reaching out!

Hey BGman,

Glad to hear everything is good to go. Tech can be a little tricky, and sorry to hear you ended up with the wrong remote at the time! With the issue being resolved, I am going to lock the thread at this time. If you run into any questions from here, please feel free to create a new post.

Best regards,

Jake
