Google nest mini not update setting (error code 401)

Vinhthong

I have two Google Nest Mini speakers. Both are connected and working well (voice commands, changing volume, playing music from Spotify). However, one of the speakers cannot save the settings shown in the image. The speaker is actually connected and appears in the Google Home app. However, any changes to the speaker's settings in the gear icon result in a message saying “couldn’t connect” or that the settings can't be saved. I’ve tried doing a factory reset, but it didn’t work.

Hi @Vinhthong,

Thanks for posting in the community forum. I'm sorry to hear that one of your Google Nest Minis can't save its settings when you try to change them in the Google Home app, and that you're getting an error message. I appreciate your troubleshooting efforts in trying to resolve it. Don't worry, I'd be more than happy to help you. To better assist, please confirm:

  • Are you using the latest version of the Google Home app?
  • What is your Google Nest Mini's current firmware version?
  • Are you listed as the owner or admin of your Home structure in the Google Home app?
  • Have you tried any other troubleshooting steps besides factory resetting your Google Nest Mini?

Please let me know the answers to these questions.

Best regards,
Jonathan

  • Are you using the latest version of the Google Home app? —> yes, 3.33.273 on iOS
  • What is your Google Nest Mini's current firmware version? System firmware version: 468348
. Cast firmware: 3.75.468348
  • Are you listed as the owner or admin of your Home structure in the Google Home app? —> I am the owner.
  • Have you tried any other troubleshooting steps besides factory resetting your Google Nest Mini? —> No

FYI, this Google Nest Mini is the Japan version. When I factory reset it, it boots up and speaks in Japanese. When I add it to the Google Home app, I notice a difference; the app notifies that the speaker will install an update, whereas another speaker (US version) does not prompt for an update when added.

Hi @Vinhthong,

Thanks for your reply. To provide you better support, please confirm:

  • Could you please confirm if one of your Google Nest Minis appears under "Local devices" in your Google Home app? If not, can you describe any differences you notice between your two Google Nest Minis in the Google Home app?
  • Based on the picture shared and the information shared, it seems your Google Nest Minis are in the setup process but are stuck in an update loop. Could you clarify if either of your Google Nest Minis has been successfully added and is working as expected?
  • Could you tell me if you have another phone available to test whether the issue persists on a different phone?
  • Do any of your family members have access to the Google Home app, and if so, can they check whether the issue occurs for them as well?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Sincerely,
Jonathan

My Google account is personal, with no device sharing with others.

The image shown in the previous post clarifies that the faulty speaker had an update option when added to Google Home, while the well-functioning speaker does not have this. Two speakers have been successfully added to the Google account.

Things I have tried and the error persists:
Using a different iPad and adding a speaker
Using a different iPhone and a different Google account to add a speaker

I have a video of the two speakers; the first speaker (Japan) has all functions okay, except it can't save settings. The second speaker (Ok) works well.

HI @Vinhthong,

Thanks for getting back to me and for the helpful information shared. Let's try these steps:

  • Clear the cache of the Google Home app.
  • Create a new home structure and try adjusting the settings on your affected Google Nest Mini.
  • Check the country/language settings of your phone, Google account, and Google Home app. Ensure they are all set to the same country and language.
  • If possible, consider changing your Google account and Google Home app region to Japan to see if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, please tell me if this is the first time you've encountered this settings issue and if your Google Nest Mini was recently purchased. This will help determine if the settings issue is related to your Google Nest Mini being region-locked or having limitations due to being manufactured in a different country.

Please keep me posted on how it goes.

Cheers,
Jonathan
