How can I set google home mini to use the find my phone feature on my new phone?

theboss98

I bought a new iphone 13 mini and gave away my old Samsung to my housemate. Did a full reset on the phone before giving away so my google account is logged out on the device. The problem is, that I can’t use the find my phone feature on my new phone because it always tries to find my old Samsung device. I tried to log out the phone in my google account too and also tried to delete my google home mini from the google home app, but the find my phone still searches for the Samsung phone. How can I set the google home to find my new device instead of my old samsung?

Hi @theboss98

This Help Center page should help you make sure that your new phone is the only phone the Google Assistant should find.

Be ready to find a lost Android device - Android Help  and in step 5 you will be able to delete any unused devices.

Hope that helps clear out that iphone  and here is the Google Assistant Help page about find your device: Find your phone with Google Assistant - Android - Google Nest Help

Hi there,

Please have a look at the Google Nest help center link below for more information about the find my phone feature for iphones.

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7535860?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS&oco=0

You should also uncheck your old device (show in menus) on the Google Play store link below.

Hi theboss98,

That certainly isn't the experience we want you to have with one of our feature but, the links provided by JillG and Cathal_S are correct. The steps can be found there like the part where you need to uncheck your old device on the Google Play store link. You also need to turn on notifications and do a voice match for the feature to work, follow the steps below:

Turn on notifications and Critical alerts:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap Settings > Notifications.
  3. If you have the option, tap Turn on Notifications > Go to settings. This takes you to the Google Home screen in your iPhone’s Settings app.
    • If you don’t have the option to turn on notifications, this may mean notifications are already turned on.
  4. Tap Notifications > turn on Allow Notifications.
  5. Go back to the Google Home app for the setting to take effect.
  6. To turn on Critical alerts, from the home screen, tap Settings > Notifications > General notifications > turn on Critical alerts.

Set up Voice Match:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap the triangle next to the Google Account, then tap another account or Add another account.
  4. Tap Assistant settings > Voice match > Add a device.
  5. Make sure that you check any devices you want to to use to Find My Phone for.
  6. Tap Continue > I agree.
  7. Follow the in-app steps.
  8. To get your personal information, you must turn on Personal results. Tap I agree and proceed with the Voice Match setup.
  9. To invite others to set up Voice match for tailored results, tap Invite > choose your communication method, and send the invite. To skip this step, tap No thanks.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan

Thanks for the quick and helpful tips. I did every step that you mentioned multiple times and even tried to do a full reset on the google home mini but it still can’t find my new phone for some reason.

Hey there,

Thanks for the response. When you mentioned a full reset, was it the same steps as you see in this link? If so, try these instead:

  1. Go to https://goo.gle/3aFSuU8
  2. Tap the profile account on the top right corner
  3. Choose library & devices
  4. Tap the devices
  5. Uncheck your old mobile phone and put a check on mark on the new phone

Tell us how it goes.

Regards,

Dan

The strange thing is that I can’t even see my new device here. My only device unchecked is my smart tv stick but I still use that.

Hi theboss98,

Do you mean you can't see your devices from your Google Home app? Do you have a dual band frequency with a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz active? If so, connect to each one and see if your devices are there. Also, check if your router/modem has a band steering connection. It is a feature in which the frequency changes from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHZ and vice versa depending on the strength at that specific time.

Looking forward to your response.

Dan
