How to tell who is viewing Nest Cam

CarolynCASL
Community Member

My Google Home just said that the Nest cam is being viewed, but neither me nor my wife are viewing it. Is there a way to see who is viewing it?  It had a blinking green light, and it said "Nest cam is being viewed", but we do not know who is viewing it. Is there a way to see who is viewing it and how to kick them off?  It's kind of creepy knowing someone unauthorized is watching us.

I found a question about how to turn that notification off, which is not what I'm looking for. I want to keep being notified.  I also saw an answer to a question that was my question, but it does not seem that the specific question of "how do I see who is watching and make them not watch me?" was answered.

Hi CarolynCASL,

Thanks for reaching out.

I appreciate all the details you've shared. Are there any other people linked to your Google Nest speakers? Also, do you know if there are other people connected to your network?

Kindly list down all your Nest devices including your cameras connected to your network so we can start some troubleshooting steps.

Best,

Princess

Thanks. It's just me and my wife connected to our network.

We have 4 Google Home Nests. We have a bunch of smart plugs and lightbulbs. We have a few pucks as well.

Thanks.

Hi CarolynCASL,

Thanks for the info.

If you're a Nest Aware subscriber, your Nest camera’s video history will be stored automatically in the cloud. You can watch your Nest camera’s video history on your phone or tablet or with a computer.

Your camera's video history on a computer will include a timeline at the bottom of the screen that helps you scan your recorded video to find important events.

Your timeline serves two major purposes:

  • It shows you when an event happened in your video history. Motion or sound are examples of camera events.
  • It lets you quickly go through your recorded video history so that you can jump straight to events and see what happened.

By any chance do you have a Nest Aware subscription?

Best,

Princess

Yes, I have a Nest Aware subscription.  Are you saying that anytime the camera is sensing motion or sounds, then it puts the warning on the screen that the Nest camera is being viewed?  That is not my experience.

When I open the Nest Aware app, and view the camera, the warning appears on the screen.  But I sometimes see the warning when nobody is viewing the app. And we see the motion and sound warning notifications many times, and we don't see the warning that the camera is being viewed when we see those.

Hi CarolynCASL,

Thanks for responding.

I appreciate all the info you've shared. By any chance, have you already tried to perform a complete reset on your Google Home so we can check if you will still experience the same thing? Let's go ahead and try that and let us know how it goes.

Best,

Princess

My question is whether there is a way to see who is viewing the camera, and if it's possible to kick them off?

Hi CarolynCASL,

To answer your question, there's no way others can see those settings unless linked to your devices that is set up. Aside from you, are there any other people connected to the same Wi-Fi that uses the Home app and Nest app?

Princess

Thank you for your help.  The only people who have access are me and my wife. How can we see who is viewing the camera when it says it is being viewed?

Hey CarolynCASL,

Thanks for coming back to us. Please note that there's no way to know who's viewing the camera. Could you check how many accounts are linked on the Google Home app. Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap "Settings" then "Household."

Keep us posted

Cheers,

Muddi
