Mini Nest forgets everything (episode 2)

jpjeffery
Community Member

Hello

In response to @Ivan_R 's response to my, now disabled, post (Mini Nest forgets everything), I've looked at the link suggested, but I don't really see anything there that I've not already tried.

The device responds to my voice (so the mic isn't off).

I've removed the device from the Home app and started the process of re-adding it (I've lost count of the number of times I've tried this). The speaker has been found, and I've just picked the Wifi confirming that it can use the previously supplied password. Just after this it prompts "This device was previously set up by a different user. Please factory reset the device."

Other than when we first purchased it, this unit has only been set up by me (after multiple factory resets), so "...previously set up by a different user..." is a pretty weird thing for it to say!

The process then got in to a loop:

"What are you setting up?" I select Speaker.
"Plug in your device" It already is, so I select 'Next'.
"What are you setting up?" I select Speaker.
"Plug in your device" It already is, so I select 'Next'.
"What are you setting up?" I select Speaker.
"Plug in your device" It already is, so I select 'Next'.

Third time of asking Home finds the device, and I'm able to get it working again, but for how long?

Send device usage and crash reports is already selected for this speaker.

So, I'm not sure we've made any progress here.

Hi jpjeffery,

Thank you for posting here in the community. I´m sorry that the Nest Mini forgot all your settings, and when you try to set it up again, it goes into a loop. Help´s here.

I just want to make sure you did the factory reset properly with the following steps:

  • On the side of your device.
  • Switch the mic off. The lights will turn orange.
  • Press and hold the center of the Nest Mini.
  • Where the lights are on top. After five seconds, your device will begin the factory reset process.
  • Continue to hold for about 10 seconds more, until a sound confirms that the device is resetting.

After you confirm the above steps correctly, please add the device again; use the instructions here to set up the Google Speaker. There are a few options to pair, and when the prompt says, "What are you setting up?" don´t press Speaker; the system will automatically find the device on the app to pair.

Keep me posted; I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Byron

Thank you. All of that looks very familiar (i.e. I've done all that loads of times) except for one bit: "...don´t press Speaker..."

I will try that and let you know.

I just tried to cast to it from my phone but it wasn't listed as an available device.

Voice prompt resulted in the speaker saying "Please log in through the Google home app".

In the Home app I see the speaker listed in Devices so I tap on it. The Home app asks which room is it in, so I tell it. The Home app asks me to "Confirm your preferences".

"Hi! I'm your Google Home device..."

I can now cast to it...but it keeps dropping connection. The Podcast I'm listening to is now playing through my phone's speaker, AND through my Mini Nest speaker but 10 seconds behind...except it's just this moment stopped....but now started again!

I wasn't trying to use Group Playback though. I was just casting to the speaker with my phone. The expected result here is to have audio from the Mini Nest only.

Hi jpjeffery,

Thank you for posting. I´m sorry for the misunderstanding. Let's check out other options.

If both devices play or cast at the same time, make sure that both devices are connected via Bluetooth, not the Google Home app, and when trying to cast, please use the correct commands. Here is a link on how to properly connect the Nest speaker via Bluetooth using your phone.

Let me know if you need more assistance.

Well, so far it's been much more reliable for playing music/podcasts using Bluetooth (I had no idea it offered Bluetooth!), but in the room just now, with no prompting, it piped up with "I can't find the WiFi network. You might want to the modem or router connections". If I try a voice command it says that again, and shows as offline in the Home app.

Hi jpjeffery,

Thank you for posting. I'm sorry that it is still showing troubles with your WiFi connections on your Nest Speakers. Help's here.

Please try to reboot your WiFi router. Here are the steps:

  • Unplug the Wi-Fi router from the power source for 2 minutes.
  • Ensure that the router's lights turn off completely when unplugged.
Note: Some routers have backup battery packs, so if you need to disconnect the battery packs as well to ensure that the router is completely turned off,.
  • After 2 minutes, plug the router back into its power source.
  • Once all the router lights are back and they find the network name listed in the Wi-Fi options on their mobile device or computer, they should check if the Google Nest or Home device is now connected to the Wi-Fi network.

If the issue still persists, please reboot the Nest Speaker. Here are the steps:

  1. Unplug the power cord from the speaker or display.
  2. Leave it unplugged for one minute.
  3. Plug the power cord back in.

Let me know if you need more assistance.

All that has been tried before, and besides, all other WiFi devices have no trouble connecting to the WiFi.

Anyway, I tried it again, but still the Mini Nest says "I can't find the WiFi network..."
