Need help connecting Google Home to new Wifi

Hardinwo
Community Member

I can’t seem to connect my Google home speaker to a new Wi-Fi. Although I follow the directions in the app, it seems I don’t have the buttons on my app that I need. It could be that my Google Home speaker is old and needs an update. But I need a specialist or someone who really understands this to advise me.

Good luck with this.  I had the same issue with a Nest Camera with Floodlight. The version of Google Home just downloaded from Google Play (2.62.1.2) doesn't seem to match up with directions that Google is giving. There is no "Delete" option, no way to change wifi settings, and a poor user experience all around. I started a chat with a Google rep that consisted of "I'm sorry, I'll help." repeated several times followed by dropping the chat. No help at all.

Hi folks,

That's not exactly the experience we want you to have, especially with a new Wi-Fi connection. Let's go ahead and get you connected. Follow the steps below for a successful set up.

If your speaker or display isn’t connected to a Wi-Fi network, set up your speaker or display on the new Wi-Fi network:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top left, tap Add > Set up device > New device > set up new devices in your home.
  3. Follow the in-app steps.

If these steps don’t solve the issue, you’ll need to factory reset your speaker or display, then set it up again.

If your speaker or display is connected to an existing Wi-Fi network, but you'd like to connect it to a new one, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. At the top right corner, tap Settings > Device information.
  4. Next to "Wi-Fi," tap Forget. You’ll be taken back to the Home app home screen.
  5. Follow the setup steps to set up your device on the new Wi-Fi network.

If you get an error message that says "could not communicate with your [device]" when you try to forget your network, or the steps above don't work, you'll need to factory reset your device and set it up again.

Tell us how it goes.

Best,

Dan

It goes poorly, Dan. Under the Settings > Device information there is no "Wi-Fi" option on my Home app. There are entries for "Camera mount", "Name", "Home" (unchangeable), "Room", "Open Source Licenses", and "Technical Information". The 3-dot "Menu" in the upper right displays only "Help" and "Feedback". None of those bring up a "Wi-Fi" option. In fact, I've been unable to find any option anywhere in the Home app that is labeled "Wi-Fi" or that accesses Wi-Fi parameters. The only way I've found to change anything about a Wi-Fi connection is to bring up the device options, "Remove device", hard reset the device, and then go through the entire process of setting up the device as a new device with different wi-fi parameters. Luckily, my camera/floodlight is reachable to do the hard reset, but I see others here facing the same issue whose devices are mounted 20 feet up on the side of their house.

Also, inviting another person to be a member of the home I have set up just prompts for a name/email address with "Cancel" and "Next" buttons. Entering an email address and selecting "Next" does nothing except clear the keyboard from the screen and leaves only the "Cancel" and "Next" buttons with no explanations.  Selecting "Next" does nothing, although it is supposed to come up with something like "Send invitation". It doesn't. Selecting "Cancel" prompts "Discard changes? Any progress won't be saved" with "Go back" and "Continue" options. Selecting "Go back" returns to the previous invitation screen with the non-active "Continue" option. Selecting "Continue" on the "Cancel" screen aborts the invitation process. Person attempted to add gets no invitation or email.

I'm not sure what version of the Home app you're posting these directions for, but it's certainly not the same as mine. I'm using Home version 2.62.1.15 for Android, downloaded from Google Play last week (Again) on a Samsung S9+ with 6GB of memory running Android v10.

Hi Jammin2,

That's quite interesting! If you don't mind me asking, is your Google Home app on a preview program? If it is, could you get out of it and try the set up see if it works?

Looking forward to your responses.

Regards,

Dan

I installed the Google Home app (version 2.62.1.15) from the Google Play Store online to my Galaxy S9+ running Android 10. To my knowledge, it's not a preview/demo/beta.

Hi folks,

Thank you for the confirmation and for doing the steps provided. Try these steps instead: after the factory reset and re-installing your Google Home app, you need to set up your Nest devices. Open your Google Home app and tap the + sign on the upper left hand corner. Choose set up new device and follow the steps.

For detailed information and troubleshooting, click this link. Make sure to choose which phone are you going to be using once you open the link.

Tell us how it goes.

Best,

Dan
