Nest Hub (and mini) play music on the wrong speaker

JTon0295

I have routines set up in Google Assistant to (among other tasks) play music on a specific Sonos speaker.  In the past week, they have started to play the music on a completely different speaker, even though the routine clearly states the right speaker. In addition, a voice command to resume music on a specific speaker results in the assistant saying it doesn't recognize that device, however, the device appears in the unit's device list and can be controlled via the touch screen.

Any help you be appreciated!

Hi JTon0295,

I know how it feels if something's not working as it should be ― let's go ahead and find the solution. Are there any changes on your Wi-Fi network? If so, what are those? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot to refresh all your devices settings and connections. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest Hub and Nest Mini. Plug them back in starting with your router. Rebooting your phone might also help.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Dan

Hi Dan,

There have not been any network changes. However, I have take the steps you suggest and it did not fix the issue.

I DID remove voice assistant from my Sonos and then reinstalled. That fixed the problem for a few hours. It is now happening again. This is only happening on the voice assistant. Tapping on the routine works just fine (whether tapping on the phone or the Nest Hub. It also CHANGES the speaker it controls, yesterday it was the bedroom today it is the loft.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Hi JTon0295,

Hats off to you in doing the provided steps and more. For confirmation, are your Nest speakers  and Sonos in a speaker group? If not, then unplug your Sonos speaker and give a command to your Nest Hub or Nest Mini and see if the behavior persists. By the way, may I know what exactly are the Nest speakers you have there aside from your Nest Hub and Sonos?

Thanks,

Dan

They are not in a speaker group. If I unplug my sonos speakers, how will the hubs be able to control them? They problem is not with the nest speakers, the problem is in the virtual assistant and its ability to recognize the proper speaker. The automation works perfectly when it is run by selecting it from the Routines menu.

Hey JTon0295,

Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. To confirm, have you tried renaming your devices? Please avoid using names with similar words as it may cause confusion to your device. Also, do you experience the same issue when the commands are not on routines?

Cheers,

Muddi

The device behavior is really interesting. When I "click" the routine on the Hub it executes perfectly. When I ask the assistant to run it, it either doesn't understand the sonos request or it misinterprets the device. However, a similar routine runs just fine. Example:

"Start Work" routine - turns on office lights, resume music on the office sonos, gives the weather , and reads the news. In this routine everything works expect the resume music. Some days it doesn't understand at all, and other days it resumes on a totally different device.

"Finish Work" turns off the lights and pauses music on the office sonos. This works perfectly, including the pause command.

I deleted Google Assistant from my sonos system and then re-added it. It successfully added all the devices and the routines worked perfectly...for a day or so and then it started happening again. Google Assistant on my phone does not have any issues with the routines.

Hey there,

We hear you! It would seem like we need to reset your Nest speakers to revert it back to its default and original settings. Afterwards, please set it back up to the same Wi-Fi where your phone and other devices are. Here's how.

Tell how us how it goes.

Thanks,

Dan

Factory reset did not solve the problem.

Hi JTon0295,

Thanks for doing the factory reset. It would help a ton if we could isolate your Nest Hub from your Sonos speaker. Is you Sonos linked to your Nest Hub via Bluetooth or through the Google Home app itself? If so, disconnect it and have them individually reproduce the routines and the specific command if there are changes or differences. This is quite interesting and we really appreciate the patience.

Kind regards,

Dan

The Nest hub is connected via the Google Home app.

The Hub functions exactly the way it is supposed to for every other command EXCEPT trying to access some of the Sonos speakers. If I disconnect the Sonos from Google home, GA can no longer recognize any of the Sonos devices.

I only play music on Sonos, I do not use the hubs to play music because they cannot access my Music Library on my NAS.

I have used GA to perform these routines for a year or more. Now something has changed, just can't isolate what changed.

Hey JTon0295,

To confirm, does this issue happen only when playing music via the Sonos speakers? Have you tried renaming your devices? Also, what is the specific model of your Sonos speakers?

Hi. Renaming the devices seems to have worked...at least for now.
