Nest Mini (2nd Gen) Only playing 1 Audio Channel

KVIV
Community Member

I am having an issue where my Nest Mini Speakers are only playing 1 channel of audio (left I think).

I already had 2 Nest Minis (2nd Gen) and a Chromecast Audio in a speaker group and it all works fine.

I have just purchased another 2 Nest Mini Speakers (2nd Gen). When playing music (using multiple apps) on a single device it is fine. However, when I connect the new units to a group they only play half the audio as though they are connected in Stereo mode (they are not). The old units play all they audio as they previously did.

I have tried factory resetting the devices.

I have tried creating a new group.

I have tried creating a group and playing audio from a different device.

I have tried moving the units to different rooms.

All of the above had no effect.

Hi Muddi,

I am no longer experiencing the same issue as I took the 2 units back to the store and got a refund.

Hi KVIV,

You need to create a stereo pair of two of the same speakers, this will not work for speaker groups.

Have a look at the Google Nest help center link below for more information.

But I don’t want them to be paired, they are in different rooms?

You will only get mono sound then.

Edit: you can try removing and re-adding the speaker group but the only way to get two of the same speakers to play in stereo is by pairing them.

Hi Cathal,

I really appreciate the swift response, but I do not believe you understand the problem and may have jumped the gun. Please feel free to re read my original post, and if you have any useful advice I will be happy to listen.

To give you a bit more insight, most music has duel channels (left and right). When playing on nest mini (single speaker), these 2 channels are both played through a single speaker making it mono. I have 2 other Google Nest Mini speakers that do this just fine.

The new Google Nest Mini only plays HALF the audio (left only) meaning you do not hear half the song/music… this of course incorrect and should not do this.

As you have mentioned, you can split the channels out by pairing 2 devices together so the left channel play through 1 speaker and the right channel plays through the other. I DO NOT want to do this. The speakers are in different rooms. I would like both channels to play through 1 speaker.

Hi.

I have the same problem. I just listened Fluorcent Adolesent by Artict Monkeys and in the first part the voice sound really really low, like when you use just one headphone

Hey KVIV,

We apologize for the confusion. I understand that concern about your Google Nest Mini's that are having issues with sounds when on speaker group. When did the issue start? Please try creating an audio group that consists of the problematic devices. Let's see if the behavior will still be the same.

Also, please provide the current firmware version of your Nest Mini's.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

I’m having this exact same issue, so it’s very frustrating that this thread has been marked as ‘solved’, when the solution is to sell the devices for a refund.

To be clear, I have speakers that when playing music as part of a group, only play one channel - I believe it’s the left. As Alberto_o says, this is very noticeable on tracks such as Fluorescent Adolescent. The track I’ve been testing it on is Mr Brightside. When playing through a single speaker, the song sounds fine, but when playing through a group, at least one of the speakers will be missing the drums entirely for the first 10-15 seconds, which is when the mix changes in the song and the drums come through both channels.

It seems to be inconsistent as to which speaker will have this issue, and none of my speakers are set up in a stereo pair.

Hey joshclark,

It's the original poster who marked this thread as resolved since he chose to get a refund from the store. Moving forward, could you share a short clip video so we have a better picture on what's happening on your device.

Here’s a couple of videos highlighting the problem. Worth noting this is on a Nest Wifi, which as far as I know can’t even be put into a stereo pair.

The first video shows the song playing on just this one speaker. It plays back fine.

The second video shows the song playing on a speaker group. On this speaker only the left channel plays, meaning the drums in this section aren’t audible. Every other speaker in the group plays both channels.

I have noticed the same with the minis, in a group of two minis three Chromecast audios and a nest audio
