Nest Mini 2nd Gen not casting

Anonymous
Not applicable

As of this morning my Nest Mini (2nd Gen) will not cast music from Android phone or Chromebook on Youtube Music. I rebooted all devices etc and no resolve. Tried Spotify and there were no problems casting music/media from that to the Nest Mini. All apps & firmware are current/updated. Thanks in advance.

Same issue with my Google Home Mini (1st gen) and Google Home Speaker (also 1st gen); both can't cast from Youtube Music (neither Android, nor iOs) but Spotify is working alright.

Also battling this as of the morning of 11/9/23

Same here. It's a shame that it doesn't show any kind of error message, and just says "connecting....". It's not the first time this happens to me.

Meanwhile, Spotify works as usual... If I didn't have Premium I'd switch back to Spotify right now.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing the details about the issue you're experiencing with casting songs from YouTube Music to your Google Home and Nest speakers. I totally understand how frustrating it can be, but don't worry, we'll work together to get this sorted out!

To confirm, are you able to play music via voice command? Do you also have the same issues when casting to a Nest display? Also, what is the firmware version of your speaker?

Using the Google Assistant app on your phone, please try casting songs via voice command and see if your device will have the same behavior.

Cheers,

Muddi

Spoke w/ YoutubeMusic this a.m. on the phone and they are "looking" into it.

To answer your questions Muddi;

Yes I can play music via voice command.

Firmware is up to date.

Don't have a nest display.

Wait, what? you mean tell my phone to play music or tell my phone to tell my device to play music?...

Thank you.

Hey CraigM3,

Thanks for sharing the information. You can cast music via voice command using the Assistant app on your phone by saying, "Cast music from YouTube Music to <name of speaker>"

@julianjm: I'm happy to hear that it's now working. As of the moment, our team is still looking into this to see that root cause of the issue. I'll update the thread once I know more. For now, let's continue to monitor your device and make sure they are getting enough signal from your network.

@AllexRo: Looks like the issue has something to do with the network. How far are you from your devices when you try to cast? Also, how far are your speakers from your router? Are you able to cast now using your Android phone?

Cheers,

Muddi

I have 2 units of Deco X60 which cover in full signal the entire apartment (Google Home Mini is right under one of the Deco units). And also, in the past, same setup didn't have any issues. In fact, to rule out a network issue I tried other setup, with same issues.

Concerning Android, the cast works and not - moving up and down through the list happens with a delay; if I want to stop cast, the music continues to play on Speaker as opposed to the past, when the music would switch playing from Speaker to phone.

Interestingly enough, I also have a Google Home Hub (1st gen as well, the one with the smaller display) and this one didn't have any cast issues while the other 2 units were experiencing problems.

Hi AllexRo,

Thanks for the information. Could you try moving your Nest Mini devices where your Nest Hubs are located? Let's see if you'll have the same issue. Also, is iPv6 enabled on your router?

Cheers,

Muddi

After using voice commands it starting working again for the android/PC app...

Any explanation on what is the real issue here?

Thanks

The Android workaround (trying to cast-connect to speaker after music has started via Voice Control) seems to be working. However, on an iPhone I have to press the cast button (at that point nothing shows up) and then go to phone's Settings, disable and re-enable the Wifi, return to Youtube Music and then all the cast devices appear and I can cast-connect successfully to a speaker.
