Nest Speakers and Pixel Phone Blasted News in Middle of the Night

hummingbird
Community Member

Last night my Google Pixel 4a phone and all Google Nest speakers blasted the news at 3:00 am.

This was the middle of the night and no one issued any command asking them to do it.

How can I prevent this from happening again in the future?

Hi hummingbird,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

This is not the experience that we wanted you to have, let me help you out. A few things: Which Nest speaker? Have you checked your routines in the Google Home app? Is it recurring?

You can check my activities and see any Google assistant activity that happened during that time. If you can take a screenshot of it and send it to us so we can see it too. Below are the steps on how to upload a photo:

  1. Start a new post.
  2. Click Insert Image.
  3. Choose an image source location.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions

Also, you can tap the "Drag and Drop" option. Maximum attachment is 5 MB.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Juni

Hi Juni -

Thanks for the follow-up.

I'll make time to get some screenshots to send to you soon.

I can answer your question about which Nest speaker -

It was on several:

Pixel 4a phone
Nest Mini Gen1
Nest Mini Gen2
Nest Audio
Google Home (original)

Hello!

I went into the Google Home app and confirmed that there are no Routines set at all.

It's probably been over a year since we have asked Google Assistant for the news. At that time if we said "Hey Google Good Morning" it would respond with a few news items on just the one Google Nest Mini Gen1. But as I said it's been over a year (or more) since that command was used. We quit using it because the sound volume was unpredictable and annoying.

I do not see an option within Google Home that is called "Activities". If you can point me in that direction I'll see if I can see what Activity is posted for 3:00 am on that date.

Many thanks, Hummingbird

I couldn't find a place that shows "Activity"

Hi hummingbird,

Thanks for the update. Check the instruction below on how to check the My activity on your Google Home app.

Check your Google Assistant activity history

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Tap My Activity .

You can also check this link.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Thank you Juni -

Here's what it says:

Item Details

Assistant

Received an Assistant notification

Details

November 4 at 3:33 AM

Why this Activity?

This activity was saved to your Google Account because your Web & App Activity setting was on while using Assistant.

That's all it says.

Here's the question - it was 3:33 am and everyone in our home was sound asleep. No one asked the Assistant to do anything and there were no Routines set asking the Assistant to do anything.

Thank you for your continued support,

Hummingbird

Hi hummingbird,

Thank you for your patience and the effort to do those steps with Juni. I would like to continue where you left off. Since you’ve already checked the routines and nothing is found, I need you to do a sequential reboot to refresh the connection. Unplug and re-plug your router followed by your Home Mini, Nest Mini, Google Home and Nest Audio. Do the reboot in order starting with your router. Restarting your phone might also help. Monitor and tell me if the behavior persists.

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks Dan!

I just want to clarify -

Should I unplug and re-plug the router before rebooting the other devices

or

Should I unplug the router then unplug the other devices then plug everything back in starting with the router?

Thanks!

Hummingbird

Hey there,

Do the latter. While you're at it, you can also uninstall and reinstall your Home app. As long as you use the same account, your devices will not be removed.
