Next step and related commands not working while cooking

I can ask my Google Nest Hub (1st gen) to search for a recipe, and I can open a recipe just fine. I can then say "start cooking" and it reads and displays the first step. While I do whatever I need to do in the kitchen to complete that step, it stays on the screen. When I return and say "hey Google. Next step" it says it doesn't understand and then searches the web for the phrase "next step." 

 
If I say "continue cooking" it also doesn't return to the recipe, but instead searches the web for the phrase "continue cooking."
 
I can click the "previous step" and "next step" buttons and it navigates through the recipe as expected, though it only displays; it doesn't read the recipe step aloud.
 
When I get to the end, if I click "I'm done" the. It says it doesn't understand and searches for the phrase "I'm done"
 
I'm not listening to anything or playing other media on the device. There are no background noises in the kitchen that could confuse it. 
 
Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm new to the device, so I could simply be doing something wrong.

I am sorry to hear that you are encountering issues with your Google Assistant not being helpful with displaying recipes. As you are asking a Google Assistant related question, I recommend you posting your question to the Google Assistant Help Community Forums. A specialist there should be able to look into this issue and help you.
