No longer able to turn off TV - "Sorry, I don't know where to play the video"

PBusardo

So I used to be able to turn off my living room TV...
"Hey Google, turn off the living room TV"

It would do it without issue.

Now, all of a sudden, I'm getting the following error,
"Sorry, I don't know where to play the video.  Please tell me the exact name of the screen."

What the hell?

Amazon will turn it off as will Samsung Smart Things.

What is going on?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

I'm having the same issue. Google home is linked with smart things. Strangely the command works fine on the bedroom TV. Just giving this question a bump to see if anyone has a solution.

I'm having the same issue with my Sonos... anyone found a fix?

Mine also seems to be only using the assistant on Sonos.

my Lenovo and google nest hubs seem to control the TVs fine still.

So odd, tried rebooting my sonos and re adding to to my Google home. But same issue, it will turn on the TV just fine, but when I ask it to turn the TV off it just says : "Sorry, I don't know where to play the video.  Please tell me the exact name of the screen."

So frustrating.

Same here, sucks.  If I say turn everything off in the room of the tv turns off but not on its own.

Oh Google!!!

Change the name on the TV is ridiculous but it works right away.

Just tried this and it worked. Having named the TV the same as the room it was in must have confused it somehow

PBusardo

Agreed.  Ridiculous, especially after the original USED to work without issue,  but this solution did work.  Thank you!

Worked for me too

I don't even have a TV connected to my Google Hub. When I press the YouTube icon, this is what it says. HELP

Seonz

What did you rename it to so it works?

Smucky

I had a crack yesterday and it did work for me also.

remove the word TV from the name.

example Theatre Room TV I tried changing to either just “Theatre Room” or “Theatre Room Sony”

this did provide a work around for the issue.

you can still say “Turn TV on/off” or “Turn Theatre Room TV on/off”

Such a dumb solution. How on earth do you even break this when it was working fine for years? Feels pretty amateurish.

Exactly.

Tried changing the name too. It didn't work for me. I have a sony xbr tv with built in android tv.

You might want to change the name using the TV and not the home app. I was having the same issue.

Same issue.  Worked before.  Moronic...

Someone on Reddit said to say "stop casting to (your device name)" and this has fixed it for me.

I say: "Stop casting to the living room TV"
I get: "I also need to know which device to use.  Try saying that again and include the device's name."

Hey all,

Sorry for the late reply, and to hear you are still running into trouble. I wanted to follow up, and provide you with some troubleshooting steps that could be of help. Please let me know if that helps resolve the issue, or if you are still having trouble from here.

  1. Make sure that your Chromecast firmware version is updated.
  2. Make sure your TV's firmware is updated by checking the TV user manual. You may also contact your TV manufacturer to verify.
  3. Make sure CEC is turned on (for some TVs, adjusting certain settings can turn off CEC automatically).
  4. Switch Chromecast to a different HDMI port.
  5. Unplug the TV, wait 10 minutes, and plug it back in.
  6. Try using a different voice command.
  7. If you’ve turned the TV on or off repeatedly during a short period of time, the voice commands may briefly stop working. Wait about 10 minutes before trying again.

Best regards,

Jake

I'm fairly certain the reason for this issue is because commands have to go to Google to perform a search to determine what to do. There is no processing built into the hub. As such, if somebody sets up something in Google's search to try and play a video and it comes up as the first result, that is what we are seeing. Changing the device means that it doesn't come up in the search results.

This used to only happen for tv, but now it is also happening for living room tv. I bet whoever set up that unique search result is adapting to this workaround.

What I did in the past was change the device name and then set up a routine to point to that device.

Just tested with another name change, and my routine worked. I can still use "turn off tv" as a command by pointing it to the correct device with an uncommon name.
