Original Google Home Max (2017 model) Losing WiFi Connection Frequently

Hello,

I have the original Google Home Max (not the Nest one), model GA00222 what was released back in 2017. It's been a great device, even though it's sense been discontinued. The one issue I'm having with it, it's the only one of my many Google Home devices I have (Mini's, Hub's, etc.) throughout my home that seems to lose WiFi connection fairly frequently, I reboot it, and it's fine for a period of time. Then randomly when I say, "Ok Google!" it states back to me that it's not connected to the WiFi. I'm wondering if it's something to do with my WiFi network that I'm connecting it to. First off, it's a hidden network, it's also a WiFi6 network and has the newer WPA3 encryption/security enabled. Even though, what's odd, all of my other Google Home devices are on that same network, and they all seem to connect and hold the connection just fine. Being it's a little older, and that it's discontinued, so I'm presuming it's not getting any further software updates, is there any type of comparability issues this particular device can run into with the newer WiFi protocols by chance? Also, I've read around online that the USB-C port on the back of the unit, some people were able to use a USB-C to ethernet adapter I guess and to make the device hardwired? If this is true, is there anything I'd have to do to configure it? Just to state as well, I've attempted to factory reset it already and to reconnect it to the WiFi network, and the random issue still seems to persist. Thanks in advance.

Hey PicAFlic,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

Sorry for the late response. I know how it feels when your Google Home Max is having issues when connected to your network. All Google Home or Nest speakers and displays should be able to connect to a WiFi6 network.

To further isolate the issues, try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Home Max).

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Well, I have one issue. As I said several times in my post, I don't have the Nest Hub. I have the original 2017 Google Home Max model that has sense been discontinued. If you have any suggestions on that one, please do so, thanks.

Hey PicAFlic,

My apologies for that. I already updated my previous response. To confirm, have you tried connecting your Home Max to a different network like mobile hotspot?

Cheers,

No, I have no means to. It's my regular home WiFi. I'm just wondering with the new WiFi6 protocol, and being the older Google Home Max is discontinued, I presume there's no software updates for it any longer. If there's any known issues connecting it to a WiFi6 network, or, as I stated initially, on how to use the USBC port in the back to hardwire the connection, being I've read several occurances of people doing that to.

Hi PicAFlic,

Understood! While Google Home Max is compatible with WiFi 6, it performs optimally when connected to either a 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz network. To prevent your devices from switching networks, you can disable band steering on your router. If you prefer a wired connection, you will need a "Type C, USBC Lan" Ethernet adapter. However, it is not recommended to use an Ethernet adapter for setting up the Home Max, so we suggest using WiFi instead.

Cheers,
