Question about a Nest Hub v2

Hello,

I'm considering purchasing one, and would like to understand if it can be setup without using a camera/qr code.

Also... can it be done from a browser, too ?

Nest Hub doesn't use a QR code for setup, so you won't need to scan anything with a camera. Setup cannot be done using a browser, you will need a phone or tablet with the Google Home app. Full requirements below.

  • Latest version of the Google Home app.
  • Latest version of the Google app.
  • A Google Account.
  • A mobile phone or tablet that:
    • Has Android 8.0 or later.
    • Works with 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi network (a WPA-2 Enterprise network won't work).
    • Has Bluetooth turned on.
  • An Internet connection and secure wireless network.

Hi mazzinia,

The information davidking provided are correct. The Google Home app can only be downloaded on a mobile device which you will use to set up your Nest speakers and displays. Once you get all the right requirements, follow the instructions below for the set up.

  1. Plug in your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Tap the Add icon > Set up device > New device > follow the in-app steps.
    • If the Set up devices button is not on the screen:
      1. To set up your first device in the Home app, tap Get started > Set up new devices > Create another home > Next > enter a home nickname and address.
    • Note: You’ll need to enter a nickname, but you can choose not to enter your address.
      1. To set up all other devices, at the top left, tap the Add icon > Set up device > New device.
      2. Follow the remaining steps.
  4. You’ll be able to opt out of some settings, like Voice match or Personal results. You can change these settings any time after you complete the setup.

For more information about how to set up, see this guide.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Dan

Well.. I guess I will think a bit, because my path would involve using an android tv box to do the pairing and setup... and yes, i've sideloaded google home on it, and works ( aside not having the google assistant part installed ), but to really try would required something to pair

Hi mazzinia,

To make sure we are on the same page — have you successfully linked your Android TV box to your Google Home app? Since you mentioned it is without the Google Assistant, does it have a built-in Chromecast? Could you tell me more about it?

Also, what device is required for you to pair it with? Let’s narrow it down so we know what steps to take.

Thanks,

Dan

Oh yes, is linked correctly to the point that I've added google home to the bluestacks emulator that I use in a vmware image, and it sees the house I created.

Yes, has built in chromecast, the android tv box ( but don't they all have it ? ). it has the google assistant but the android tv variant working with the remote controller mic... it's a box with dvb-T2 tuner made for a big phone provider.

I was simply musing about buying a nest hub (v2) to use as bedroom alarm and such. I may be, and likely am, a bit not mainstream, but I'm using mainly a xeon workstation for everything, so i am still using webos as mobile platform.

Hey there mazzinia,

Apologies for the delayed response. I understand that this would be a helpful feature, however this option is not available. Google Nest devices are recommended to set up using Google Home app. Also, when linking 3rd party devices which have either a built-in Google Assistant or built-in Chromecast, it still needs to be added via the Google Home app.

In line with this, we want to encourage you to send feedback from your end and we’re hoping for all the possibilities by taking our user’s feedback and suggestions.

Let us know if you have additional questions, otherwise we'll be locking the thread in 24 hours.

Kind regards,

Dan

No, no additional question I guess. It boils down to taking a risk and doing a test, easy if could borrow for 5 minutes any device , complicate if the only option is buying and risking having a chain anchor.

Hello mazzinia,

I understand where you are coming from. The best option for now is to send feedback to our product team like what Dan suggested. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns; otherwise, I will be locking this thread shortly.

Thanks,
Lovely

Except that sending feedback is from a Nest device or google home (after selecting a connected device) . This whole thing is about connecting a device... you know, having emails or forms to send feedback would help instead of locking it
