Radio Alarm not working on Google nest hub

Gillianallen

I have both a Google nest speaker and a Google nest hub in my bedroom. When I disable the nest hub microphone and say "Hey Google, set a radio alarm", it works perfectly (on the nest speaker) but when I turn on the microphone of the nest hub display and then say the exact same thing, I get a response (from the nest hub) saying "sorry, I can't do that on this device yet".

It's infuriating. The whole reason I got a nest hub was for it to replace a broken radio alarm clock I had on my bedside table.

Does anyone know why this might not be working?

Hi @Gillianallen

No idea why enabling/disabling the microphone would make any difference, but if you normally use the 'Set a radio alarm' command I believe that google are making changes to how google assistant works and one of the things that is changing is that using media alarms is shortly to be disabled.

See this link:-

See the second point in the article.

There is an alternative though and that is to create a personal routine to play the radio and give it a Starter action time of when you want it to action, e.g. your required alarm time. This is fine if you you always set the alarm for the same time every day, but not quite as useful if you tend to vary the alarm time.

According to the article you can of course send feedback about the changes.

Thanks for the response @Kadven . I probably didn't explain it very well in my first message. When I disable the microphone on my google nest hub (the display on my bedside table), the microphone from my google speaker (sat at the other end of my room) responds, and that speaker appears to still be able to set a radio or media alarm. So I'm intrigued why that speaker can do it, but the display can't. Given that seems to be the case, do you know if there's a way I can get my speaker to by the default "answerer" to my "Hey Google" questions, even when I'm closer to my Google nest hub display? Or would the only way to do this be to keep the microphone on that device switched off? Although by the sounds of it, you're saying that in the not too distant future, even my google nest speaker won't be able to set a radio alarm?

Hi @Gillianallen

Sorry, I don't have a google nest hub to experiment with, only some google nest speakers so cannot help with this aspect. Someone else who does have a nest hub device and nest speakers may have an answer, although even if you do find a solution, if it is possible, it seems that it will only be short lived when they actually remove the music alarm facility altogether. I've also noticed that others have also reported a similar type of issue and do not appear to have found a satisfactory resolution.

In the mean time it may be worth trying out the routines, since I've found that they can be quite useful and even a bit more reliable than some of the voice commands altogether. I played about with these a year or so ago when the assistant went for a month or so when time based voice commands virtually stopped working altogether and found that using routines was a workaround that did work.

Might be bad news, looking at the press release yesterday they are closing the feature down. See it here

This problem has existed since 2020, google have still not fixed the issue, it does not effect every account only some. From what i have worked out over the last 3 years trying to get google to do something about it is, people who originally had an @google email are the people with this issue.
