Radio timezone incorrect on Google Home devices

Simonpaz12
Community Member

My Google Hub keeps playing QLD radio instead of radio in my timezone (VIC). TuneIn and iHeart Radio. I can't find anything in the settings to fix this. My home address is correctly set.

I'm getting the same problem. I'm in Adelaide (UTC +10:30 at the moment) and it always plays radio from Perth (UTC +8) .
This happened only since moving to Adelaide from Canberra (UTC +11). I've reset devices but it hasn't made any difference, as as per @Simonpaz12, I can't see any way to fix this!!!
My Google devices have never been to Perth!

This is happening to me as well, however i'm in Adelaide and my Nest devices are playing radio from Perth which is hours out of my timezone. This is very annoying!!!

I'm experiencing this exact same problem (just different states). It used to work perfectly when i lived in the ACT, now I'm in a different time zone and everything is out of whack, It doesn't even play from the ACT timezone, which would at least be better than the time zone it's playing radio from.

Asking the device to stream it in your state should work. E.g. “Hey google, stream triple J NSW”. The TuneInn Free app is built into google and can’t be changed by anything but voice commands. Alternatively you can open the radio app on your device and cast it to your speaker.

So how do we actually get Google to fix this? Surely it should pick up the timezone automatically from it's location?

Hey folks,

Thanks for posting, and we apologize for the late response.

We know how it feels when there's something wrong with your device - we'd love to help. A few questions - what specific radio station are you having an issue with? Does the same thing happen on Tunein or iHeartRadio app? Does the same thing happen when you use the Google Assistant app on your phone?

@Adro: Appreciate your help here. I agree with him. Adding the state will help the speakers to stream the right station.

Let us know the result.

Regards,

Muddi

For me, it only seems to be the case on TuneIn (which seeems to be the default app).
If I ask it to play from iHeartRadio it responds that it's playing, shows the iHeartRadio logo, but then doesn't do anything more... it just goes silent and then back to the time.
These things really are nearly useless! They're way more time consuming to try and fix all these problems, than the time and conveniene that the supposedly save.

It continues to be an issue for me. I can’t make it select a NSW time zone or the local station when I ask it to stream Triple J Radio.

It continues to be an issue for me too unless I specify using using iHeart Radio

Not really sure what I should try....

I've checked the location of my home is correct in the Google Home app. Other than that, I'm unsure what there is.

As an update, the other day TuneIn radio played from a completely new location (Brisbane, QLD).

It’s a continuing problem! “Hey Google, play ABC Radio National” in Canberra consistently brings up the service from the Adelaide time zone.

Fascinating, I hadn't experienced this until I moved time zones. I don't know if it's the change in timzone or the change in my ISP.

@BroadbandWally when I was in Canberra my ISP was AussieBroadband and I didn't ever have a problem. Wondering if it had something to do with geolocating the IP address...

@Jake it seems pretty much everyone here needs help...

How do Google Home devices determine the time zone to play radio from?  I've even found asking to play from a specific time zone either confuses Google even more and it just doesn't understand, or it plays something entirely unrelated from Spotify or YouTube.

problem here too - we get ABC RN from Adelaide. Tried Heart option but then got Perth. Tried specifying Tasmania and got ABC Local from Northern Tasmania. Eventually fluked it, but want to be able to do this as a regular daily event 6 days a week

I've found you need to add the name of your state after the name of the radio station. If that doesn't work, try the local big city. Finally, if you suspect iheartradio or tunein finds the correct location then add the "on iheartradio" at the end.

Having said all that I suddenly find Queensland radio is defaulting to somewhere else with daylight saving the moment daylight saving time came in. Very frustrating!  Hopefully just a temporary issue. I was looking forward to streaming radio in summer with the correct time being called out in the morning.

Hi Juni, this hasn’t been worked out. We should be able to ask google to play our radio station based on our home location without adding in a bunch of qualifiers.

@Juni this isn't resolved and should not locked. This should be addressed as a bug by developers. There should be no need to ask for a particular time zone or state or city for a radio station. It should just play the local time zone station by default.

Thanks for the "Listen to radio" link, it has some basic information, but it doesn't address the issue at all. It doesn't even mention time zones!
