Re: Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen dropping Bluetooth after hours of loop play.

Prior discussion thread was locked on me when I was out of town for a few days during the week between Christmas and New Years.

I spent months trying to fix the issue, so think it’s important to update with the latest findings.. Please read prior thread here to review what I tried:  https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Google-Nest-Mini-2nd-Gen-dropping-Bluet...

I am posting this now because I tried another test and have found my solution. The issue was that with Google Nest Mini, playing a 24/7 music loop via Bluetooth on iPad to Nest Mini speaker, beginning in late October/early Nov 2022 it started dropping the connection (I now believe drop happens consistently within 24 hours). In the two years prior, music  would play for weeks via Bluetooth to the Nest Mini without any issues. I purchased a new Nest Mini thinking it may have been a hardware issue. This did not fix the problem. I tried streaming from other devices (iPhones) to the Nest, and problem still occurred. I tried streaming from devices to another Bluetooth capable speaker (a Bose Soundlink III) and it played until I ended the test two weeks later.

Everything I tried was suggesting to me that a change in Nest Mini Firmware created my issue. I am taking the time to follow this through and post a new message in order to help others who run into this same issue. On 12/26/2022 prior to leaving town, I decided to try streaming from same iPad 3, to a different smart speaker, an Alexa Echo Dot (5th Gen). This morning, 12/31/22 I returned home and the music loop was still playing to the Echo Dot speaker. I have no reason to suspect that it won’t continue 24/7 using this new device. Everything was exactly the same… same router, same network, same iPad, same app (VLC music player), playing my “endless” loop music. When I use this setup and stream to the Nest Mini (my original and my newly purchased one) , the Nest Mini will drop the Bluetooth connection within 24 hours… but i can confirm that playing with same setup to the Alexa Echo Dot, the music stays connected and plays as it should.

I loved the size of the Google Nest Mini, and really loved how it worked for me for over 2 years. Unfortunately, after trying for months to get things working and reaching out via the prior thread, nothing worked and at this point, my solution is to switch a different smart speaker. I am going to also test streaming via wifi to an Apple HomePod mini, as I purchased the Alexa Dot and Apple HomePod mini to see which one I prefer overall. If this thread is allowed to remain open while I conduct the Apple HomePod mini test, I will update and let the community know if it also stays connected beyond 24 hours. I tried the Alexa Echo Dot first, because it is a more direct comparison to the Nest Mini, since both allow Bluetooth streaming from other devices. The Apple HomePod has a different variable (it uses wifi “Airplay” to stream from iPad to speaker). If both of these new smart speakers work equally, I’ll decide which one I prefer based on other smart speaker features.

Thanks to Dan and Muddi for trying to help. I wish the thread had not locked on me while I was on a small vacation, but these things happen.

Update: Regarding the Apple HomePod mini… Since my source (IPad Gen 3) did not have Apple’s “Home” app comparability, streaming via airplay to the HomePod mini proved to be challenging. I may have had to upgrade to a newer iPad. For this reason, the Echo Dot is the winner. It has maintained the Bluetooth connection 24/7 without dropping. It is behaving exactly as the Nest Mini used to. I wanted the Nest Mini to be my smart speaker but unfortunately the apparent change in firmware a few months back made it a nuisance. I pray that Amazon does not make this mistake with future firmware updates. This will conclude my experience in trouble shooting the Nest mini. I hope this helps anyone with the same issue.

Hi,

Did you guys review my prior thread and see everything that was tried? This link is in my post here.

As for me, the problem was 99.9% a bug in a firmware update. Prior my Googls Nest Mini would play my room ambiance loop music  for weeks and weeks. It was wonderful for a few years and then the problem popped up. As you will see when you read my posts, I tried just about everything. The solution was to try the exact same setup with an Alexa Dot Echo. It has been working flawlessly for a few weeks now. I pray they don’t make the same mistake Google made in a future firmware auto update. I wanted to stick with the Google Nest Mini, but ended up returning 2 additionals that I had purchased. I still have my original nest mini, but will no longer be using it. So, for anyone who wants to play continuous loop music for more than 24 hours, via Bluetooth, my solution was to switch smart speaker brands. I hope Google cares enough to fix this bug, as I did enjoy the size of the speaker. I personally don’t need anymore assistance but will check back for replies until you lock this thread.

In short: Try an Alexa Dot if your loop music will not play longer than 24 hours with the google Nest (since an October/Nov 2022 firmware update).  This was the solution for me and I’m hoppy my problem was eventually east to solve (after trying everything else). Cheers!

Hi there,

Thanks for the response and sorry for the delay. Were you able to submit the feedback as directed from the last thread that you created? If not, here are the instructions again.

For the team to further investigate the issue, please send feedback using the keywords: "GHT3 Bluetooth keeps on disconnecting." It is best if you could send feedback after you experience the issue, and make sure that crash report is enabled. Follow the steps below to know-how:

Turn on device reports:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your speakers.
  2. Open the Google Home appGoogle Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right corner of the screen, tap SettingsRecognition & sharing.
  5. Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)

Let us know once done.

Regards,

Juni

Hi. I have given up on getting support with that issue and have switched to an Alexa dot. I am happy to report that I’ve had zero drops when streaming from Bluetooth from my old iPad to my echo dot. I am happy this solution worked for me as it has helped rid me of a major nuisance that began after a firmware update with the Nest. I no longer have a need to have the Nest issue fixed as I am not using it anymore. I tried for many weeks and spent more time than most. Take care.
