I am having a very similar issue with another two application which cast announcements to a Google Home Speaker group. It worked flawless till a few weeks ago... The application has a status of the speaker group-- and when it fails to cast-- it says "buffering". I am not sure if that is a Google Home/Chromecast state or what. I am able to clear it and it sometime will work again.

@Tillman89, @Wpiman, that certainly hasn't been easy for you ― let’s check this out. What Nest speakers and Chromecast are added to your speaker group? Have you already tried doing a sequential reboot starting with your WiFi router/modem followed by your speakers and chromecast? If not then please do so and tell me how it goes.
