Sky news has no sound on Google nest

I'm based in the UK (if that matters) and have no issues with sound on my Google nest, apart from when trying to play sky news (which Google chooses as default news, so if I ask for just 'news' , sky plays) - it plays the video but no sound at all.

 

I've seen older posts about this but they've been closed so I'm starting a new one. It's been the case for a month or so now. It's no biggy for me really as I'm happy with any news channel and will just ask for BBC, but Google shouldn't have their default news channel not work properly, so why not let them know it's an issue.

I have the same issue. But, it's intermittent. One day it will have audio, the next it doesn't. This morning, no audio! I am in Australia. I also find that the Sky news broadcast will sometimes stutter to the point of being unwatchable. And sometimes, nothing comes up at all. However, when it does work, it's great!

Thanks for reaching out and letting us know about this issue.

 

A few things: Is this isolated to just one Nest Hub? Have you tried using another Nest display or your phone’s Google Assistant to further isolate the issue? What troubleshooting steps have you taken to fix the issue?

 

You can both do a sequential reboot. First, unplug your Nest displays for 30 seconds, then do the same thing to your Wi-Fi router to refresh both devices and your Wi-Fi signal.

This is an ongoing problem for many of us and it seems to only be with Sky News as part of the news lineup.  One would expect better answers from Google at this point.

Could you please advise on what troubleshooting steps are available to us? I'll try "hey google troubleshoot sky news", see if that works.... 

With all due respect Juni, you've clearly not read the threads on this topic ("you're out of your element"). It's quite the read as this has been going on for years now.

I don't have a second nest display to try on - but considering that this happens with other people, in other countries, I really don't think the problem is on my end.

As for troubeshooting, I have tried 'turning it off an on again' and also simply skipping the sky news bradcast and then trying to play it again.

Sky news on Google home just generally seems dodgy. Another thing that sometimes happens is that the same new broadcast will play for multiple days - i.e. it doesn't get refreshed.

What would be useful is for Google to speak to the folks that produce this news broadcast and find out why it sometimes doesn't work.

This has been an ongoing problem for the past year. Last week I had Sky news with audio all week, today again no audio.  All the other news channels have audio except Sky News, yet Google seems to be oblivious.

It's been an ongoing issue with me too. Sometimes Sky News will have audio and then I'll go a week or more with no audio.  All the other news outlets play just fine.

Mines been working for the last few days now, did you guys do anything?

 

I don't want to jump the gun though, as it does seem to be an intermittent problem for alot of users so... It may just be a good patch. 

 

Will keep an eye on it and update. 

Yeah mines worked a few times now too. But I’m not going to hold my breath. I’m also working on a theory that this only affects the nest hub. Ie I think it works perfectly on a home mini. 

Nope, issue is identical across hub mini and hub max.

I have this problem too.  

Even after a reboot.  

It's only sky news.  

It's clearly a Google problem

As this is an intermittent problem, it makes it very hard to solve! Yesterday morning, Sky news worked fine. However, on Sunday morning, there was no sound again. I'll start recording when it works and when it doesn't.

I have the same issue and it’s intermittent, sound worked yesterday but not today. I’ve tried turning it on and off and the WiFi but it still keeps happening. Presumably it must be an issue at the Google side with many people having the same problem. I’d be grateful if you could investigate further thanks

It worked this morning! But I asked it to trigger manually. I'm now wondering if it something to do with it being a part of a routine?

Just triggered mine manually. Noted 06:57 time of release. No sound. It’s not related to being part of a routine. Good thought though 👍🏼

For the past couple days I’ve had no video in any of my news casts. It’s like I’m listening to a series of audio only podcasts. I thought this might have addressed the ‘Sky news with no audio’ problem but again this morning Sky news had no audio. Only now it has no video either.

Have had this exact same issue. Intermittently no sound on Sky feed as part of morning/waking up routine. Have also had the feed stutter as if it’s not streaming properly. I work in IT, have a solid wifi signal throughout the house; have a hub mini, hub max, and two mini speakers. Have reset them all, deleted my home and rebuilt it. Reset router, replaced router, rebuilt home again, and it still doesn’t work 😂 This is either Google’s or Sky’s problem. Everything else works flawlessly. 

The only pattern I have noticed is that the sound comes back on weekends. During weekdays, never works. 

Used to report the issue every time it happened. No feedback, no change. Now I just skip Sky News. Think it’s time to remove it from my routine.

@google How about you fix this already please?  Clearly its not an isolated incident.

Here's an idea, get 10 devices and try them.. pretty sure one of them will fail...

Hi,

It has been happening intermittently on mine for approximately 3 months. Tried resetting it and it works ok for a few days, then no sound on sky news again. Then it works ok for a while before it happens again.

Had been working fine for a few days consecutively. Failed again this morning 06:30 GMT

Mine remains consistently dodgy. Working some days. Not working this morning either. However, an even bigger problem I now have is that I still don't have video in my morning news routine. I am able to ask 'Hey Google, play sky news with video' and then it sometimes works with video. I say 'sometimes' because it's not always. And another thing.. the lady that announces the news has now changed to being American. She is normally Australian. And sometimes she still is Australian. Pfft. Whole thing is dodgy as. At least the timer still works ok.

For me, the problems persist. Until Google sort this out with the news provider (in this specific case, Sky News) it won't be resolved.

Are you able to assist with that?

Yes, this is just Sky news that has these problems.

No, I have not tried contacting the news provider. How would I do that? Isn't that Google's responsiblity? If you have contact details for me I'll gladly contact them.

Same with me, some days I have sound and other times I dont. Most times I don't.

I've just bought the old first gen Google Hub and found that Sky news on my morning routine doesn't have any sound today. I searched for the issue online and came across this thread.

Any further ideas to get it to work?

Hi Muddi,

 

I think the answer to this question is a resounding yes by all the responses you have had below. 

People are going to vote with their feet soon enough and just get rid of their Google home setups. And I don’t blame them to be honest. It’s infuriating.

Please find the answers to your products problems before Google home becomes a  story of failure that we tell our kids about.

This issue has actually been going on for years and is not just isolated to sky news. BBC news used to be an option on a routine and it has the exact same issue. I also have audio cut out with live BBCiPlayer. My Connection is perfect, I have 2 Nest Mini, 1 Nest max and it does the same on all of them. They are regularly turned off and reset.

It’s very frustrating and I would expect better from a google product. Enough to put me off the brand when it comes to replacing/upgrading my current set up

Same! This has been an intermittent issue for me for a couple of years, but it's always Sky news that either doesn't have sound, or the image is jearky. I'm in the UK.

Please stop telling people to reboot their devices.
