Speaker Group

kingkoy007
Community Member

I've created a group for all my speakers. I used to just say "Hey Google, play (music) on speaker." And it will automatically play music in the group which I also titled "Speaker". Tried it today and it doesn't seem to work despite restarting all the devices. Does Google still recognise these groups to play music? I can't even "cast" my music to it.

Thank you for your post.  I thought I was going nuts, I to am experiencing the same anomaly.  Unfortunately, I have factory reset all of my devices, uninstalled Home, readded devices and it's all F'd up now!  It has been acting goofy since yesterday, and I use it daily and all day.  WTF

I get a message that, it is sorry, please try again and its only when attempting to use the Home Group.

I wonder if Google is actually trying to fix this or if they have ever sent out an system update that no longer supports playing music in group.

Same here, only solution is to play the music or radio on your closest device then 'move the music to GROUP'. Long winded but with Google not seemingly testing updates it's just another annoying moment, I've learned now not to try factory resetting anything anymore now, if they broke it then they 'might' also just fix it.

Being a part of this community, I hoped atleast a tech specialist from Google would reply to our posts, or even suggest a fix. But, nah - nothing from Google. Quite disappointing. No wonder a lot of friends have moved over to Apple since they have apparently better customer service.

Hi folks,

@kingkoy007, @GreasedPig, @RMuser, this is not the experience we wanted you to have, let us help you. A few things: which Nest speakers are we working with? When did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Once done, change the speaker group name. Follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap the speaker or speaker group that you wish to change the name.
  3. Tap on the gear icon at the top-right corner to open the Device settings page for the speaker.
  4. Tap on the Name option.
  5. Customize your speaker's name and tap SAVE to continue.

For more information, see this guide.

Tell us how it goes.

Best,

Dan

This did not resolve the issue.  The group can be created, the devices are available to add, and I have added them.  I have changed the name of the group.  Same result.  Testing with Google devices only ! Nest Speaker and the Google Nest Hub.  Later I tried to add Bose Speaker 300 which used to work.  I have also changed wireless networks and tested with the same result when asking to play on the home group.  The Google responds with  "something went wrong, try your request again in a few seconds".  Only the 2nd Gen Hub plays audio on the Home Group after the week of Feb 17.  This also is the same result when I try adding the Bose Speaker 300.  All of this was working until the week of Feb 17.

Hi GreasedPig,

Sorry for the delays. Chiming in, to make sure we cover all bases here. To confirm, do you get the same response when asking one of your speakers to play music to another speaker (eg. Hey Google, play music to bedroom speaker)? Are you able to play music on audio group when your Boss speaker is not included?

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

I am able to play on separate speaker but no matter what I try I can no longer play on my speaker group. I tried resetting all of my devices multiple times and recreated the speaker group on google home app, but issue still exists. Google home keeps replying back, "sorry, I dont understand"

What's been around for over three years is gone now. It has been like this for about a month now. With this issue being so widespread, I'm surprised that no specialist is actually aware of this and by the fact that it still hasn't been solved.

I just read an article that this may be due to a legal issue.

Either way, can I at least find out why this is happening all of a sudden.

Hi moon15347,

I appreciate your quick response. Could you list down your speakers included in the group. Also, have you tried connecting to 2 of your speakers to a different network to check if you will have the same issue?

Cheers,

Muddi

I have two nest mini 2nd gens and one google home. I've tried to assign them to different speaker groups without any effect. By a different network do you mean wifi? Sorry I only have one wifi account.

Hi moon15347,

Let's go ahead and try setting up two of your devices using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Nest Mini). Once done, create a group then check if your device will have the same behavior.

Keep us posted.

Sorry I only have one cellphone.

Either way, what should be the problem? Shouldnt it work on any wifis?

Hi moon15347,

It should work. Connecting your devices on a different network will help us isolate the issue. Could you try moving your speakers near the router and see if you will have the same issue. Also, you can try to create a group with 2 devices only to check if they will have the same behavior.

Sorry I invited my friend over and tried your suggestion, didnt work.
What seems to be the reason for this?

Hey moon15347,

Thanks for trying. To confirm, do you get a message when trying to play music in an audio group? Normally, there's an issue with the network that's why you're experiencing issues casting to your speaker group. Since all troubleshooting steps have been exhausted, please fill out this form with all the needed information so we can forward the issue to the team.

Let me know once done.

Cheers,

Muddi

Greetings All,

Nice to see some that I am not the only one having this issue.  I will be testing some more on these devices when I get the courage up to reset my devices again after resetting them all 15+ times.  Why is this even happening when it was working prior to Feb 17?

I wonder what changes Google has done this time without notifying the customers. I am aware that recently Google had some lawsuit issues with Sonos. Hopefully this has nothing to do with it as this "unable to recognise" or "i do not understand" issue with speaker groups has never happened to me before.

My Google devices here are:

Nest Wifi Router 3 pack, a Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen), a Google Nest Hub Max and a Google Nest Audio. Only 5 of these are in the speaker group as the main router does not have a speaker function.

Im done with your trash speaker, google assistant, and google home.  I have burned the speaker alive and threw it in the **bleep**ing street.  Have a nice day. Sick of wasting my time factory resetting this Chinese Spy **bleep**.

Have a nice day.

Hope this works for some ppl, it worked for me.

I tried factory-resetting all the devices at once, and reassigned all the devices in google home app all at once. Before, I reset one device after another after aasigning them separately in google home app, but this actually worked for me.
Honestly, all the experts I've talked to give out these useless protocalls that are already easily found in google, and none of them actually works. It is sad to see that they are not even aware of this issue at all. I hope they realize that the reason we come to them is we need something more than typical protocalls that actually leads to solving problems.

Hello everyone,

Has anyone tried the steps moon15347 provided above? Could you try it and see what happens? If done and still the same issue please inform me of the exact error message why music wouldn’t play on your speaker group.

Also, if the same error occurs, you can fill out the form provided above and let us know once done so that this can be forwarded to our team.

Regards,

Dan

Hi Dan_A. I've tried all those things but it still won't play music in the new "group" that I have assigned them. Re-installed, reasigned - nothing worked. All it says now is "Sorry, I couldn't understand." I've given up on it now actually. I've settled to just playing music by playing videos on tv instead.

It's quite disappointing that Google suddenly makes these changes without notifying their customers. And when these issues occur, the customers have to go out of their way to troubleshoot their devices on their own. Not even one representative from Google customer support calls them personally to walk them through. Secondly, not everyone who uses Google knows there is online community that "may be" able to help them with their issues. Ontop of that, this has been been reported nearly 3 weeks ago - and that is just from me. There are people who have been experiencing this issue far longer than yet Google is still expecting us, the customers, to lodge a report or a ticket instead of taking the initiative and looking into it. Poor customer service, I would say. No wonder other brands have much better reputation that Google, despite Google being THE Android.

Hello everyone,

@kingkoy007, could you again do a sequential reboot on all your devices and recreate a speaker group with a different name? This time, do not include the Nest Wi-FI points on the speaker group. Just do the Nest Hub Max, Nest Audio and Nest Hub 2nd Gen.

Kind regards,

Dan

Lock the thread?

Me and some of the folks who have replied have already said that we've done what's been mentioned on the previous replies. Those are basic trouble shooting strategies. And, NO, they still do not work. Why has Google still not released any info about this? Or atleast contact their customers directly to troubleshoot the issue? Instead, we have a "community" that only gives us trivial advice. Disappointing.

This is total garbage.  It was working fine for years and then stopped working Feb 17.  This is no fault of mine or anyone else, with the complaints that are coming in on this issue, locking the thread is the last thing that should happen.  At this point, I no longer have any speakers to test with, I have taken them out in my backyard, and put bullets in the Nest Hub and the Google Speaker because of the lack of concern from Google.  Thank God these devices were Free, I won't be buying any google products going forward after this shenanigan.
