Hey Google Nest Community,

Between wildfire season and recent increased efforts to reduce air pollution, it’s more important than ever to know about the air quality in your area. That’s why, starting today, we’ve added Air Quality information to the Ambient screen on Nest Hubs so you can stay informed with just a glance. The new AQI (Air Quality Index) badge is included in the clock/weather widget for US users in select markets.

With this new addition to Nest displays you can also:
  • Ask "What’s the air quality near me?" as a voice command
  • Get alerts when the air quality drops to an unhealthy level or unhealthy for sensitive groups

About AirNow and  AQI
The EPA uses the US AQI to report air quality, which includes a number value from 0–500 and an easy-to-learn color scheme so you can quickly know if there are any concerns about the current air quality status. Higher values mean greater air pollution, and each color represents a general quality category: Good, Moderate, Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups, Unhealthy, Very Unhealthy, and Hazardous. You can find your nearest EPA station using AirNow.gov.

Air quality will roll out to Nest displays over the coming weeks, and you can control related notifications or opt-out of seeing the AQI badge in your display’s settings at any time.

We’ll continue to make improvements to Nest displays so you can stay informed and feel prepared to approach your day.

Today, I finally got the Air Quality option in the photo frame options to enable on all my Google displays (all my Nest Hubs, Nest Hub Max, and Lenovo Smart Display). However, upon enabling it, it doesn't show anything on the ambient display. I am assuming I am in an area (Bay Area) where it is supported because when I ask what the air quality is, it gives me the new AQI information with the ranges of sensors around me.

Is there anything else I have to do or am I missing something? With all the fires going on in California, I would hope this was a supported area.

Hi Ranova,

Thanks for your post. The wildfires in California are affecting a lot of people, so I use this feature as well. No worries, I would be more than happy to help answer your question.

You will need to toggle on the 'Air quality' option for your display.

Here are the steps to set it up:

  1. Open the Google Home App
  2. Click on your display device
  3. Click on settings
  4. Click on Photo Frame
  5. You will see an option called 'Air Quality'. Press 'show'.
    • This will show air quality when available in your area.

Thank you for your patience and stay safe! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
