Stops and then starts

Lbw
Community Member

You ask it to play music. It plays the music. Then you tell it to stop playing the music. Which it does. And then randomly a few minutes later it starts again all by itself. Call me crazy but I thought the word stop meant to stop to cease to not do something anymore.

Hi Lbw,

Thank you for posting in the community! I understand that your speaker randomly resumes playing after stopping at your voice command. I’ll be happy to investigate and find a fix to this issue with you.

As a first step, let’s confirm that we’re on the same page. Please provide me the following important information, in order to cover all sides:

  • What’s your Google Nest or Home device? If necessary, please see the help: Google Nest and Home device specifications.
  • When did the issue start?
  • Are you using the latest version of the Google Home app? If not, you can check this Google Help Center article to learn more: Update the Google Home app.
  • What is the firmware version of your Google Nest or Home device? You can use this Google Help Center article as a reference: Find your device’s firmware version.
  • Are you using an Android or an iPhone to manage your Google Nest or Home device?
  • Is your smartphone’s operating system running the latest version?
  • What country are you located in?
  • Can you double-check if you're signed in to the Google Home app with the same Google account that your Google Nest or Home device is linked to?  Here is a Google Help Center article for your reference: Check which Google Account is linked to a speaker or display.
  • What music source are you using?
  • Are you watching TV when the device randomly turns on?
  • Was there a Google TV commercial playing at the same time?
  • Did you have a conversation that mentioned Google when randomly the Google Nest or Home device triggered?
  • Where is the device placed? For example: by itself, up against the wall, next to a window, next to a TV or audio speaker.
  • Is there anything covering, touching, or intermittently brushing against the device?

Besides the above information, please let me know if you have Gemini for Home or Google Assistant as your voice assistant. To find out which one you have, please follow these steps:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • At the top right, tap Profile picture or Initial.
  • Tap Home settings.
  • Check if you find “Google Assistant” or “Gemini for Home voice assistant.”
  • Tap Assistant Voice & Sounds or Voice selection. Check if you see voices named as colors or plants.
  • For example, if you see “Red,” you're on Google Assistant. If you see “Pothos,” you're on Gemini for Home voice assistant.

Please help me gather these details so we can continue troubleshooting and find a solution.

Regards,

Humberto

It has been happening on both of my Google Home devices for a couple years now. And obviously happening to other people as well. No I’m not watching TV it is exactly as I said. I ask it to play a playlist and at some point I say Google stop. And it stops, so it hears me. At some random time a few minutes later it just picks right back up where I had told  it to stop.

both devices are updated. I’m the only one here. it is not an issue with my streaming or my Wi-Fi. it doesn’t matter what the playlist is. they’re coming from Apple Music. I am a paying subscriber of Apple Music. There’s nothing wrong with the playlists that I ask it to play. It doesn’t matter what it is That I am playing at the time. this is all about something wrong with the programming/device.

I have the app downloaded on my iPad and my android phone both. It is updated.  I’m using voice commands obviously. In USA. Yes, my account information is proper and correct and I’m the only one using it. It has nothing to do with my account. So I’d rather not waste any more time answering questions like that. This has something to do with the Google device itself. Alexa doesn’t do this with the same playlists.  Nor does Siri.

Hi Lbw,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions and for providing additional information.

Please consider that answering some questions is not a waste of time when doing so can lead to the issue's understanding and resolution.

I’ll need your patience and understanding to respond to these important questions:

  • Is this only happening on Apple Music?
  • How about the other music services (e.g., Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, etc.)?
  • What are the speakers/displays affected?
  • What are the firmware versions of the affected speakers/displays?
  • How long does it take from when the music stops to resuming on its own?
  • How did they start the playback in the first place (e.g., via voice command or manual casting)?
  • What is the initial command to play the music?
  • Did you include the speaker's name (e.g., Hey Google, play music on "Kitchen Speaker")?
  • Did you try unlinking and relinking Apple Music in the Google Home app?

I look forward to your answers for further investigation. For any additional questions, feel free to ask me.

Regards,

Humberto.

if you had read what I said in both of my comments, you wouldn’t have asked half of these questions again.

I told you it was via a voice command and I told you what I say. I say “hey Googleplay XYZ playlist.” And the fact that it not understands me but completes the command means it is not a problem with what I am saying. Otherwise it wouldn’t play at all, now would it.

I also told you that after I say to it “hey Google stop,”, it only stops playing for a random amount of time before it starts again on its own. The keyword being “random”.

in addition, I told you that it only happens with Apple Music and that Siri and Alexa both do NOT have that problem with the Apple Music playlist.

it happens on both of my devices. Google home mini and google nest audio.

System firmware version: 510748
 Cast firmware: 3.77.510748

System firmware version: 510748
 Cast firmware: 3.77.510748

yes I have unlinked and relinked a bazillion times.

Hi Lbw,

Thank you for answering my questions and for the time with the issue investigation. What we can try now is:

When you initially request the music to play, make sure to mention the device’s name (for example, "Hey Google, play [song/playlist] on Kitchen Speaker"). I would then like to know what happens when you attempt to stop the playback.

Furthermore, if you’re able, it would be helpful if you could record a video of yourself following these steps.

Your understanding is highly appreciated; I look forward to your answer.

Regards,

Humberto

Not sure why you want me to do that. If I’m working with the speaker in the bedroom it’s right in front of me so I’m just going to tell it what to do. And it does it. Just like if I’m at the one in the kitchen I tell it what to do and it does it. This has nothing to do with the commands that I’m giving it. When I say play XYZ playlist or stream this radio station, it does it. The problem is when I tell it to stop. I have a literal screenshot that says “paused” even though I told it to STOP. i’m in this should be literally the first command this stupid thing should have been taught.

oh, and,  I wasn’t playing a playlist tonight I was streaming from Audacy radio.  But same result. I said OK Google stop and it didn’t stop it just put it on pause as I said I have the screenshots and I have the screenshot of my activity of me saying “stop.”

Hi Lbw,

Thank you for following up the stops and restarts issue investigation, and for the screenshots attachment.

I suggest trying to use a more specific command "Hey Google, stop casting" and let me know the results.

I look forward to your answer.

Regards,

Humberto

I’ve done that. And obviously when I say “stop casting” and the song stops playing, it clearly heard me and understood me. Just adding “hey Google” ahead of time is not going to make the result any different. If it didn’t understand anything I was saying, nothing would happen and music would keep going.
