Transfer to / cast to not working on larger speaker group

For some time, I've had 4 Nest speakers (3 minis and 1 Home) - two downstairs and two upstairs in my house.  I have 3 speaker groups... 'downstairs', 'upstairs', and 'whole house' (with speakers assigned accordingly).  I frequently play things from my linked SiriusXM account, by saying "hey google... play [whatever] from SiriusXM", and it begins playing on whatever speaker I'm nearest to.  Subsequently, I'll say "hey google... transfer to whole house" and it will respond "transferring to whole house" - and it will.  Worked great.

Recently, I added a fifth speaker (another mini) upstairs.  Appropriately, I added it to both my 'upstairs' and 'whole house' groups.  Doing what I described above, everything worked great - for about a week.  What started happening then was when I would tell it to 'transfer to whole house', it would reply 'transferring to whole house', but it didn't do that - just continued playing on the speaker I was talking to.  I COULD, however, open the Google Home app and check my 'whole house' group, and it would work.

After a bit of reading, I tried using the command "CAST to whole house" - same result.  Didn't work with voice command, but DID work within the Home app.  Interestingly, when I would say "transfer to upstairs", that would work... or "transfer to downstairs", that would work - but "transfer to whole house" would not.  I went thru and restarted ALL speakers... the problem remained.  I deleted then recreated my 'whole house' group in the Home app... the problem remained.  I also tried just removing my most recently added speaker from the 'whole house' group... the problem remained.

What now?  This DID work fine, but suddenly stopped working about a week ago.  Works fine from within the Home app, but voice command to transfer to my 'whole house' group does not work.

Thoughts?  Thanks!

Hi troyamiller,

I hear you. That certainly isn't the experience we want you to have with your devices ― let's check it out. Since you've done a reboot, it would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot, too. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops. Restarting your phone might also help. If the behavior persists, could you try moving them near your router to isolate the issue. Also, we could also narrow things down if you could delete the 3rd group and just create 2 new groups and try if the issue remains the same.

Speaking of, are those 4 Google Home Mini's or 4 Nest Mini's and 1 Google Home?

Check out this guide for more information.

Thanks for the reply, Dan.  (4 Nest Mini's and 1 Google Home)  I've (now) done all of the above, but no luck yet.  That being said, it DOES, for some reason, seem to ONLY happen when I'm streaming from my linked SiriusXM account.  I also have my Apple Music account linked - and it works fine from there.  Weird.  Thoughts?

Hey there,

Hmmm...that is quite interesting! How about we try other music services and have it play on a speaker group. You could also play a song on a single speaker before you transfer the song to a different speaker, but this time, stream from SiriusXM. Don't forget to be specific on the names.

Looking forward to your responses.

Regards,

Dan

Thanks for the reply again, Dan.

So get this... it randomly began working again.  I hadn't changed anything since my prior reply, after which it didn't work.  I tried several more times after that - no luck - but then tried again last Friday, and it DID.  One peculiar thing... once it did work, I used the command 'transfer', and it worked fine.  Today however, 'transfer' did NOT work... but 'cast' DID work.

So redux... it did work... then didn't work for several weeks... then started working again.  I realize that this is terribly random, but just wanted to follow up.

Hi troyamiller,

Thank you for sharing it in the Community. Since it's random and sporadic, let us monitor for a few more days to see the progress. To confirm, this is mainly about transferring a song from an already playing speaker group to another speaker group when streaming from SiriusXM, right? Could you again try other music platforms if the behavior is the same? Also, try other to transfer a song on individual devices.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Dan

Confirming, yes... this is about transferring a song from an already playing speaker (not group) TO a group, when playing from SiriusXM.  Again, that worked previously, then stopped working.  However, that began working again last Friday - but "transfer to" didn't, and "cast to" DID.

All of that being said, something I had not mentioned previously was that it never worked if I said "play [whatever] from siriusxm on whole house"... but I tried that this morning, and it DID - first time ever. 😊
