Trouble setting default speaker for Nest Hub in Google Home app

JohnPalings
Community Member

I have a Harman Kardon speaker connected to wifi and added it to the same house and room as the Nest Hub in the Google Home app. When I select the Hub, go to settings/audio/default audioplayer, the HK speaker is not in the list. However, the HK speaker is visible as 'speaker' in the room and is connected to my wifi (for example Spotify works fine over wifi with the HK speaker)

This used to work fine, but I had tot reconfigure the HK speaker and now I can't get it to work again.

I also can’t rename the HK speaker in the google home app. Maybe that has something to do with it??

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

John

I have the same problem with 5 Sony Wifi Speakers, as of few weeks ago, they have been removed as default speakers for nest hubs. and I cant re-add them. they are connected to the same network, visible and support AirPlay, mDNLA, Chromecast etc. works from any phone, just Nest (mini/hub/max) can't see it as an output device anymore

Hi JohnPalings,

Thanks for posting in the Community! Sorry to hear that your Harman Kardon speaker isn’t being able to connect with the Google Home App. To assist you better please provide me with the following information:

  1. Have you checked with Harman Kardon if the speaker is compatible with the Google Home App?
  2. Are both devices connected to the same WiFi frequency band? (2.5 GHz or 5 GHz)
  3. Have you tried resetting your speaker?

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Axel.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. A couple of weeks ago, it worked perfectly. Maybe there are changes in the compatibility? Any idea where I can find information about that? I have two Harman Omni 50+ speakers. The speakers and the Nest Hub are on the same wifi network and I reset/re-installed the speakers a couple of times.

Regards,

John

Hi JohnPalings,

Thank you for your reply.

I just want to make sure that you did the following steps to pair your Bluetooth speaker properly:

  1. Turn on the Bluetooth device and make sure it’s in pairing mode and visible to other devices. If the device has a dedicated pairing button, you may need to press it to put it into pairing mode.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Tap favorites or devices.
  4. Select the speaker.
  5. At the top-right, tap Settings, then Audio, and finally the Default music speaker.
  6. Tap Pair Bluetooth speaker. The speaker or display scans for Bluetooth devices.
  7. Tap the device once it appears on the screen. The Bluetooth device pairs with the speaker.
  8. Tap Done.

Also, please make sure which speaker is paired with Google Home:

Make sure your mobile device is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as the speaker.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. In the Home view, tap the device card for the speaker or display.
  3. At the top-right, tap Settings, then Audio, and after that, tap Paired Bluetooth devices.
  4. All paired speakers and the date they were paired will be displayed.

Please keep me posted. I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Byron

My Sony SRS-X88 and SRS-X99 have been working perfectly well with Nest/Google home for 6 years already on the same Ubiquiti network, some are connected over 2.4 others over 5ghz, and multicast has worked flawlessly. They all stopped about or month or two ago where all these speakers status is now offline , while they are clearly connected and can stream from any other device on the network.

BTW , if it helps, Google home marked all these speakers as 4CA or C4A type

Hi Byron,

Thanks for your reply.

I don’t want to connect the speaker with bluetooth, but with wifi. That’s how it used to work. I tried your suggestion anyway and managed to connect the speakers with bluetooth. The difference with my previous solution with wifi is that now all the output goes to the Harman speaker, also spoken words, although I connected the speaker to the Nest Hub as “music output”. That is not what I want.

I contacted Harman Kardon and they said nothing has changed on their side and it should work.

I’m still hoping for a solution, so any help is welcome,

Regards,John

Hi @JohnPalings!

Thanks for your reply.

I’m sorry for all the inconvenience that you’ve been experiencing with your Harman Speaker and the Google Home App. I understand that you have already followed some troubleshooting steps trying to get your speaker working as before, but it is still not connecting through wifi or showing on your display. Let’s work on this together. Here I send you some additional troubleshooting steps:

  • Remove the speaker from the Google Home App.
  • Factory reset your speaker (for this step you will need to contact the manufacturer).
  • Add the device back to the Google Home App.
    • Open the Google Home App.
    • Go to devices.
    • Hit on the tab that says "+Add.”.
    • Choose the option “Google Nest or partner device” and follow the instructions.

Tell me how it goes.

Regards,

Daniel.
