Turn of Living Room TV wrong response

chuckysw

I have a Vizio TV that is compatible with Google assistant for input controls, power controls, and launching streaming apps. I have had my TV working with my home devices for a while now. But for some reason lately that is not the case. In particular, the power controls that once worked are not. When I give the Google/Nest speaker/hub the command "Turn off living room tv", it responds with "Sorry, I don't know where to play the video. Please tell me the exact name of the screen." This power feature has worked before. The device is named "living room tv" on the home app. I can still turn the TV on using the same command. So it knows what device I mean when I say it. Only way I can turn the TV off via the assistant is asking a speaker in the same room to "turn off tv".

I found the problem to be a conflict between the Nest Display(named Living Room Display) and the TV(named Living Room TV), based on the name given to both.  I guess the Google Assistant sometimes could not differentiate between the display and TV that both had "living room" in the name and resided in the living room.  Seemed like the assistant sometimes thought that the "Living Room TV" was the "Living Room Display".  When it encountered this conflict, it wouldn't know what to do.  I ended up changing the name of my TV to "Vizio TV".  Now the assistant better understands where I want to play the video.  An odd error, as "TV" and "Display" are different things.  Might be a good idea to program the Google Home app to check if there are any potentially conflicting names.

Noticed the same behavior, just started last week with my Vizio TV. "Turn on bedroom TV" would result in the same "I don't know where to play the video" response. My TV has the built in Chromecast, and shows up twice in the Google Home app - once via the linked Vizio SmartCast app, and once as a Chromecast device. I deleted the Chromecast device named Bedroom TV from the Google Home app and then re-linked the Vizio SmartCast app to Google home and it appears to be working again for now.

This changed also fixed the power controls.
