Very bad recent reponse to voice commands

Hi.

Have 2 google Nest Audio 2nd gen speakers set up as a stereo pair. Up until about a month ago voice control was fine, but recently this has been terrible. Now when giving it a voice command nothing happens except the 4 lights come on for about 10 seconds (left speaker), then I get the something went wrong response. On second, third or fourth attempt it usually works. The commands I mostly make are just 'play Classic FM' or 'play Spotify'. This is getting extremely annoying. Anybody else recently getting these problems.

Have tried the normal things of powering down the speakers and even a complete reset, but all to no avail.

I'm having the same issue with my speakers. I have a total of eight speakers in my home. Only one will actually do was I ask it to. All other speakers will respond to my command but won't do it. Example  "hey Google play my thumbs up play list" ok here's your YouTube Playlist called you likes...................,,.... My Playlist never plays. This is ture for all other commands. It's super annoying because Google basically controls my whole apartment.

Hey folks,

Thanks for reaching and I know how it feels when something isn’t working the way it should.

Quick question: how far are the devices from the router? When did it start to happen? Also, try rebooting your router and make sure that the devices are within 15-20 feet.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Nikki

Thanks for replying.

As stated in my original mail have tried rebooting the devices and even complete resets and the problem still persists. Everything has been working fine up until about a month ago. Both speakers (set as a stereo pair) are in the next room to the router and have never had problems connecting. It seems to be that what now happens is that if I haven't used the voice control for say an hour or so when issuing a command the light comes on the left speaker for about 10 seconds then I get the error response. When issuing the command again it then usually works, e.g. rarely will they respond correctly to the first command. Very annoying since for the past year they have worked fine.

Hi Kadven,

Thanks for the details you've shared. Since you've mentioned that you've already done performing a complete reset, can you please provide the cast firmware versions of the affected Google Nest speakers.

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

Princess

Hi Princess.

System firmware of both speakers is 299498

Cast firmware is 1.56.299498.

As an extra I use 2 different google home apps, sometimes one on an android phone and sometimes using an IPAD (IOS). Connecting to the speaker stereo pair using these apps has also been more shaky in the past month, particularly using the IPAD. Both apps are up to date by the way. Probably nothing to do with it but tends to point to some sort of connectivity problem that I never had before. Nothing has changed on the network by the way.

Same issue here. With no solution. I’m getting close to switching everything over to Alexa. Wish we wouldn’t have spent so much on these 4 Google nest speakers.

Tend to agree. Very annoying since the sound quality of the 2 speaker I have is excellent, it's just that controlling them recently has become extremely annoying.

Even tried again yesterday to reset them both by first unpairing them from stereo, then factory resetting them both, then unplugging them from the mains for five minutes, then spending 20 minutes setting them all up again. All turned out to be a waste of time, still responding erratically.

Further update today (in the UK here by the way).

First thing this morning was continuing to get erratic behaviour, e.g. if the speakers responded positively it was taking them about 20 seconds or so.

Then tried things at lunchtime today (no changes made at this end by the way) and everything had started to work correctly, e.g. quick and correct responses. Then tried again this evening and things were still working correctly, wonder if some changes have been made.

Fingers crossed that the problems are now solved, but not holding my breath. Will report back here if the problems come back

Hi Princess. Thank you for responding.

Problem not gone away completely but certainly a lot better than it had been for the past month or so. From what I can ascertain it seems to be more of a connectivity problem which seems a little strange since nothing has changed on my network for the past year or so. Interestingly I have an android phone that connects to the audio devices through the Google Home App very well, but an IPAD mini that I also have is very erratic in connecting properly through the Google Home App. This started happening at the same time as the general problem arose.

Regarding the connectivity with the stereo pair of speakers I notice that the right hand speaker always connects at 5ghz, whereas the left speaker varies between 2.4ghz and 5ghz in its connection.

Hi Princess. Once again thanks for your response.

I haven't filled out the form since for the last couple of days things have been working OK. Even the IOS Google Home App has started connecting. I've no idea why all this is since nothing has changed at this end or at least that I can see.

In the meantime, therefore, I guess you can close this thread. If the problem comes back I'll let you know.

Regards, Kadven.

I actually upgraded my router and removed the extender in the house. Reset everything, redid groups, and everything is actually working here too!

Hi Muddi

The problem has occurred a few times since before, but generally OK now. From what I have now ascertained it seems the problem seems to revolve around connectivity to my network, since when the problem does occur there also seems to be connectivity issues with the Google Home app connecting to the speakers at the same time. When everything is well connected everything works fine. Just a bit annoying at times.

Consequently you may as well go ahead with closing this thread.

Thanks.
