I just bought a Google nest audio speaker, but I’m having trouble controlling the volume from my iPhone. Like I show in the video below, if YouTube music is the active app I can control the volume using the buttons on my iPhone, and if I swipe down in the top right to open control center, I can also control the volume with the buttons, although quite erratically. However I can’t use my finger to control the volume slider, it has no effect on the volume cast from my speaker.
However, if YouTube music is not the active app open on my phone, I cannot control the volume of the Google speaker whatsoever. I can open control center, by pressing the volume up and down buttons on my phone will move the slider, but have no effect on the volume coming from the speaker.

Hey @Hiphopsuperman thanks for the video. Sounds like there's something not quite right with the YTM app as opposed to the speaker; pure guess though.
I tried using the app on my iDevice tablet (don't have the phone) and the rockers work, as you show, but I can't seem to get a widget to slide down as you are able to do to test. I generally use voice commands and don't cast. However, I'm also seeing lots of confusion on the screen in the app. For example, YT Music is open, I cast from the screen and chose a speaker and then volume control works with the rocker, but it does nothing when I drag the volume slider in the app on the tablet screen. In fact, the app itself doesn't even show the song is playing nor is the timer for the sound scrubber moving. I also can't get a widget to appear in the swipe as you do on a tablet, but that may just be something for the phone. I do have a widget on the tablet home screen but no controls at all, tapping it simply expands the app.
Let me ask you to try this, load up your song as you normally do and test the phone rocker again, but instead of trying to control it from your widget, open the Home app, annoying extra step I know, but I want to see if the speaker volume can be controlled from within the Home app using the sliders when the YTM app is the source and you're not using voice commands.
While the volume is controlling the speaker I think it's more an app bug that the volume slider doesn't work by touch. I'm going to send feedback in the YTM app, could be something gone haywire with the API, you may wish to do the same. You might also want to post in the YTMusic forum, they may have seen this before too, not just with Nest speakers but other cast-enabled speakers.

Hey @GothamNY, thanks for your thorough reply. I did also try on my iPad, and encountered the same problem you did. I can cast to my nest, but the widget in the top right does not show what music is playing. So that must be an issue with iOS?
I’m not at home right now, so I can’t test out what you suggested. However when playing music, moving the volume Circle within the Google home app has no effect on the volume coming out of the nest audio.
so in conclusion, I’m not certain if the bug is with the YouTube Music app, or iOS? It gets so confusing when there’s so many different companies, devices, and apps working together simultaneously. I don’t know how much more effort I want to put into this, I may end up just returning the nest audio and picking up an apple HomePod.

No problem and no rush, when you get around to it when you get home or feel like it, pop your results. Yea, I agree, it could be anyone number of items, but again, my guess is the YTM app. One thing it's not is this isn't related to grouped speakers controlling volume, so we can rule that out.
Here too is another interesting thing. I use an Android phone, when I open the YTM app and cast music, the rocker works, but there is no slider for volume in the Android app on the Pixel phone -- it's all controlled by the volume rocker for the phone. This makes me wonder if that slider for YTM that's giving you fits in iOS is supposed to be in the app at all. I have no idea. 🤔

@Hiphopsuperman I found this -- also I'm told it's a known issue with the iOS update, but we both are able to control volume with the rocker, it's the YTM app where there seems to be a disconnect.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know I returned the speaker. No luck figuring out the issue. And that second link you shared gives me the following error: “You do not have sufficient privileges for this resource or its parent to perform this action.”
it was a good speaker, but I really didn’t want to spend any more time trying to figure out the problem. I’m just going to pick up an Apple HomePod.
i did want to come back and thank you for your help though. It’s greatly appreciated.

You are most welcome. Sorry, that second link talks about the issue being an issue with the recent iOS software and controlling music and content. It could all be related and you may have returned the speaker for no reason. It's all good though -- we all need to use that which causes the least headache, so I get it.

Hey folks,
It looks like we have come to a solution so I'm going to be locking this thread. Thanks to GothamNY for the help here. If you have any other concerns or questions, please feel free to create a new thread.
Have a great day.
