Volume control using phone

Whenever I am casting media to my Google home mini, I can't control it anymore just using the app I'm casting from. 

For example, if I am casting a podcast from Google podcasts, I can't control the volume using my phone buttons, only from the Home app. I also can't pause, skip or rewind, or even show that I listened to the whole episode because it thinks it disconnected during the episode randomly. I'll have finished listening and the app will show I have listened to 24 minutes or something and not mark it as played. This also happens with Spotify, but only the volume control issue.

This is terribly annoying. Any way to fix it?
