I open the app, go to settings > device information and tap on the name to change it but it will not open it up at all, but opens up all the other things below it. this is super frustrating as im relocating my speaker. i have redownloaded the app and tried it on another device and it is still doing the same thing.

i’m having the exact same issue. It is extremely frustrating. I have done all the troubleshooting steps suggested, including uninstalling and reinstalling the app and resetting my speakers to pair default settings to no avail. I would truly appreciate some advice on how to remedy this issue🙏

Hi there,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that you're both unable to change the name of your Google Nest Mini through the Google Home app. It's clear that this is a very strange experience, especially since troubleshooting steps like reinstalling the app and trying on another device haven't resolved it. I'm here to help you both get this resolved.

The fact that other settings are accessible but the name field isn't responding, even after trying on multiple devices and reinstalling the app, suggests we need to gather more details to pinpoint the cause.

To help us provide the most targeted assistance, could you please answer the following questions?

  1. Are your Google Nest Minis currently set up and active in the Google Home app?

  2. Have there been any recent changes with your Wi-Fi setup (e.g., new router, changed password)?

  3. Do you have multiple Google Home/Nest devices? If so, are you able to change the names of your other devices in the same way, or is this issue specific to the Nest Mini?

  4. Is your Google Nest Mini connected to your own personal Google account, or is it part of a 'family group' or shared home setup?

  5. Is your Google Home app fully updated to the latest version available in the App Store?

  6. Have you tried restarting your Google Nest Mini itself (by unplugging it for about a minute and then plugging it back in)?

  7. Have you tried restarting your router and modem? Sometimes network issues can cause unexpected behavior.

  8. Is the Google Nest Mini currently connected to the internet and functioning normally otherwise (e.g., playing music, responding to commands)?

  9. When you tap on the name field, does anything happen at all? Does it briefly highlight, flash, or just remain completely unresponsive?

  10. You mentioned that "all the other things below it" open up. Can you give an example of one or two of those settings that do open and allow you to interact with them? This helps us understand if it's a general app issue or specific to that one field.

I'll look forward to your responses so we can work towards getting your Nest Minis renamed.

Regards,

Kevin

Thank you for your response — I really appreciate your assistance.

To clarify, the issue is not limited to just my Google Mini. I’m currently unable to change the names of all three of my Google Smart Home devices: Google Home, Google Nest Audio, and Google Home Mini. Since reinstalling the Google Home app, I’ve ensured that I have the latest version.

When I go into the devices' respective settings under "General Device Information" and click on the device name, it briefly flashes ( I suppose that's how a more concise way to describe it - I'd say clicking on it highlights the selection marking it ready for editing before quickly losing highligh thus indicating it is not selected/available for editing. So its as if it’s about to allow me to edit it but then something is very abruptly revoking my access - nothing happens after that. Below the name, there are several buttons with features that seem to work normally as in I can select them for editing/and or viewing details in a dropdown, such as:

- Home associated with the device
- Room placement for the device
- Wi-Fi settings for the device
- Preview program
- Open source licenses
- Other licenses:
Technical information (system firmware version, cast firmware, language, MAC address, and IP address)

I hope this additional information helps clarify the issue, and I look forward to your response.

Thank you again for your help.
