Youtube music - free or not?

SunnyRio

Trying to play Youtube Music on Google Home. In the list of different services, Youtube says "service available free of charge". Yet when I click it, it says "Youtube Premium Membership is required to play on Google Home." So which is correct?

I just tried three music bands, and every one said "I looked for X, but it either isn't available or can't be played right now". I haven't been asked to enter my Youtube account details, where do I do this?

Hi SunnyRio,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

I’m sorry for the trouble this has caused you, let me help you out. Are you using voice commands or casting music from the YouTube music app? You can definitely use YouTube music for free however there are limitations. If you request a song it will play a station of songs inspired by the requested song, same goes for the album and playlist. Also, you don’t need to link YouTube music as the account that you used to set up your Nest speaker or display.

Check this helpful link for more details.

Listen to music on speakers and displays

Let me know how it goes.

It worked before, then I changed to Spotify, then tried to change back, but I can't get Youtube on my Google Home Speaker at all. Not even with limitations, it just says I can't. As soon as I try to change to Youtube, it says "Youtube Premium Membership is required to play on Google Home" which is clearly wrong as it used to work!

I'm just trying to use it on the Google Home Speaker, by issuing a command like "Play Miley Cyrus".

Hi SunnyRio,

Just an added questions: what country are you located in? Does the same thing happen when you use the command, "Hey Google, play music"?

I'll wait for your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

I can't get that far, I cannot set Youtube as my music provider for the Google Home Speaker using my Android phone. At that point it says I need premium.

Hey SunnyRio,

Got it! What country are you located in?

UK unfortunately. I'd prefer an independant Scotland 🙂

Hey SunnyRio,

Got it! Let's go ahead and change the Assistant language set on your device to see if this is a locale issue.

Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top-right, tap the Account icon.
  3. Tap Assistant settings > Languages.
  4. Tap English (United States).
  5. Reboot your speaker then check if you can set YouTube music as your default music service.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

I fixed it a different way. I had to reset the Google Home speaker and set it up using a different Google account on my phone, since the normal Youtube account got deleted when it was hacked into. Seems to be no easier way to simply tell the Google Home speaker to use a different Youtube account. Ever since Google and Youtube joined together, things have become a mess. Everything assumes I should use the same account for everything. Web browsers also get mixed up and keep logging me on under the wrong one.

I take it I've probably now broken something else.

Waste of bloody time anyway. I asked it play Miley Cyrus, and it says it was playing a Miley Cyrus station on Youtube, and I'm for some reason hearing Harry Styles. So as rubbish as Spotify. I guess I'm supposed to pay for one of them. Well not if they make things this difficult, forget it. Make the free version work or no payment.

Hah, fixed it. Play Youtube on an ad blocker browser on phone and cast to speaker. No ads. Tee hee!
