can't play spotify podcasts on google home

cactusfriend
Community Member

It's so weird, I can cast music from Spotify to my google speaker, but it won't let me play podcasts.

If I am not casting to my speaker, it plays just fine on my phone. But if I am cast to the speaker, I hit play on  a podcast and it does nothing.

If I say, "hey google, play the latest episode of the daily podcast", she responds "alright, playing the daily on spotify" and goes on playing music like nothing happened.

I unlinked and relinked spotify under my podcast settings in the google home app. No change.

Hey cactusfriend,

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Home device, and thanks for bringing this up.

Please note that podcast providers, and podcast voice controls availability can vary based on country, region, or language. To check if Spotify is one of the podcasts provider in your country, please follow these steps below:

  1. Go to https://bit.ly/3LM0GoL.
  2. At the end of the page, click the language and country drop-down > change the country based on your current location.
Tip: You can use your browser's Google Translate extension to translate the page into your preferred language.
  3. Select the What it can do tab.
Note: In some languages, you need to hover your cursor on the What it can do tab > click Explore All Actions.
  4. Enter the name of the supported partner or app in the search field.
Note: The search result may not show the complete list of supported partners and apps.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

I am in the US. And it used to work for me before.

Hey cactusfriend,

Got it. Could you try rebooting your Google Home and router to refresh the connection? Also, uninstall and reinstall your Google Home app.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Alex

I unplugged/plugged back in my modem, router, and google nest speakers. I also deleted the google home app and reinstalled it. I also rebooted the speakers from the app; and still no change. I can play music as expected, it is only when I try to play podcasts from Spotify.

I just realized that everything plays just fine (including podcasts) when I connect to my speakers via bluetooth. But when I try to cast from my phone (or ask google), it won't play podcasts on the speakers. Very frustrating.

Hey cactusfriend,

Thanks for trying all those steps. Could you try asking the Google Assistant on your phone to see if you'll get the same result? Also, try resetting your Google Home to its default settings.

Cheers,

Alex

I am having the same issue and have tried all these things. This only happens with certain podcasts. For example, I am able to listen to The Economist. But I am trying to play a Spotify original podcast called Bandsplain. My google home will play the Spotify trailer, but it refuses to play any individual episode. Incredibly frustrating.

Hey Miagoldstone,

Thanks for coming back to us. To confirm, have you checked with Spotify if those podcasts require a separate subscription? Also, are you able to cast it from your phone to your Google Home speaker?

Cheers,

Muddi

Not sure if this is still an active thread... I am also having a similar issue. Some episodes will cast while others will not (within the same podcast) it bumps to the next then the next and usually ends up with me having to stop the casting and then restart.

I have also tried all the above steps, even have a brand new nest hub and it still doesn't play all the episodes. But they play fine on my phone.

Hi JenniferM,

We're sorry to hear about your concern when playing podcasts on your Nest Hub even after having a new one, still the same behavior. If you don't mind me asking, for us to narrow things down, do you remember what troubleshooting steps above have you done? Also, to confirm, this is just happening in podcasts, right? Could you try other music platforms like YouTube for us to isolate? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot to refresh your devices link to Wi-Fi and each other. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest hub for 3 minutes. Plug them back in starting with your router. Restarting your phone might also help.

Keep us posted.

Sorry for the delay, I did see. I think I misspoke when I said that one podcast played some times and not others, it was two different shows.

I have done all the things suggested and didn't fix it. I also went to Google podcasts and found the one that wouldn't cast from Spotify there. It also wouldn't cast from the Google podcast app. I'm guessing, as I think someone noted, it's the podcast itself not allowing it? Is that a thing?

Hi JenniferM,

I'm sorry for the late reply. Google relies heavily on the features of 3rd party devices, apps and services. We can't rule out the possibility about accessibility and if certain podcast channels are allowed to be played. It would really be of big help if we can further isolate this first to know what steps to take. Aside from podcasts, are you able to play music using other music platforms like YouTube Music or Spotify? Follow the steps below to link a music service:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. At the top right, tap your account.
  4. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Nest speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  5. Go back to the home screen, and at the top left, tap Add > Music.
  6. To choose your default service, tap the music service you'd like to use. Assistant will use this service when you say “Hey Google, play music.”
  7. To link functionality:
    1. For YouTube, your accounts are automatically linked when you link your Google Account to your speaker or display.
    2. For Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and others, you'll need to link your accounts.
      • To connect your account, tap a music service > Link account > sign in or sign up for the service and follow the in-app steps.
      • To unlink an account, tap Unlink > Unlink account.

Note: For all services, speakers and displays currently support a single account per streaming service.

Looking forward to your responses.

Cheers,

Dan
