google nest mini not saving into a speaker group

aardbeivlaai

Hi all,

Recently I bought two Google Nest Mini 2nd generation speakers from a friend who received them with his Youtube Premium. They were both sealed and brand new.

Now I used both of them for a few days and everything is working fine. But then I wanted to add them to a speaker group with my other google devices.  I also have tried this on both iOS and Android phone and the same problem is happening.

Now somehow, one of them immediately got saved into the speaker group when I added it. The other one is stuck at 'saving into group' screen.

I have tried to factory reset it three times now but the same problem keeps reoccurring. Does anyone have a clue what I can do next?

Thank you in advance.

Hi aardbeivlaai,

Thanks for reaching out.

Sorry to hear about this experience on creating a speaker group. Since you've mentioned that you already did the reset, I'd like to check a few things:

  • What's the distance of your Google Nest speakers to each other?
  • How far are the devices from the router?
  • What's the Android and iOS version of your phone? Let's make sure that Home app is up to date.

Lastly, kindly attach a photo or screenshot of what you're getting from the Home app so we can check and compare it. Keep me posted.

Best,

Princess

Hi aardbeivlaai,

We just want to check if you have seen our response posted above. Let us know if you have additional questions, otherwise we'll be locking the thread.

Sorry for the late reply, I must have missed it!

Actually, the Google Nest Mini speaker that is the closest to the router, is the one not being able to join the speaker group.

I have a Google Nest Wifi on the first floor, together with a Google Home (this one is added to the speaker group) and the google nest mini (this one can't be added).

On the ground floor, I have a Google Nest Hub, Google Wifi Point, both are joined in the speaker group.

On the second floor, I have a Google Wifi Point and Google Nest Mini, both are joined in the speaker group.

I tried to add it on both Android and iOS, but to no prevail. My main device is iOS though, and the version of Google Home is 2.56.107.

This is the screen I will get stuck at when I try to the speaker to the speaker group.

Hi aardbeivlaai,

I appreciate the details you've shared. Could you please check if there's and update on the Home app? Make sure it is updated and all of the speakers are connected on the same Wi-Fi network.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Princess

I checked for both my iOS and Android phone and on both phones the Google Home app is updated. (At least the App store and Google Play store doesn't show me the update button)

And all the speakers are connected on the same Wi-Fi network

Hey aardbeivlaai,

Chiming in to ensure everything is covered here. To eliminate network issues, please try setting up at least 2 of your devices using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Nest Mini). Once done, try creating a speaker group and check if you will have the same issue.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

So if I understand correctly:

I will create a hotspot on phone 1

Factory reset two devices (probably one working and the nest mini that's not joining the speaker group)

and then use my second phone to add them to my current house in Google Home?

Hey aardbeivlaai,

Sorry for the delays. Your phone 1 will broadcast the router, then another phone/tablet will be used to set up the speakers. Make sure to reset your speakers first before setting up on a mobile hotspot. Once done, create a speaker group including the device that is not working.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey aardbeivlaai,

How was your device? Have you tried connecting it to a mobile hotspot?

Hi Muddi,

Sorry for the late reply, I was out on a holiday and just tried it now.

I used my iPhone as the hotspot and used my OnePlus phone as the phone to set up the devices.

I choose the two Google Nest Mini's to reset and succesfully connected them to the iPhone hotspot. When I tried to create a speaker group, I received an error:

When I browse to the speaker group I created, there is only one Nest Mini added... the one that also worked before.

The one that didn't work before still can't be added to the speaker group, so I think it's not an network issue...

With kind regards,

Aardbeivlaai

But.... I moved both speakers back to my Google Nest Wifi and now the speaker that wasn't able to join the speaker groups got an update and now it is able to join the speaker group ! 😁

Hi aardbeivlaai,

Perfect! I appreciate the update. It seems like you just need to refresh the connection on that specific device. We can now consider this one complete, so I will lock the thread shortly unless I can help out with anything else.

Cheers,

Muddi
