removing disconnected device

how do I remove a disconnected device in Google Home? I see this question asked a lot, and nobody has given an answer. when I go to remove it, it just says can’t connect, which is true the device is gone. i refuse to make another home, move the device, and delete the new home or migrate all my stuff between homes.

Hey folks,

We appreciate all your patience. No new updates for now but rest assured that our team is looking into this issue. For those users who haven't sent a feedback yet, please do so by following the steps on this guide: Share a home and devices in the Google Home app

For the meantime, please create a new home structure then move all your devices (except the one the you can't delete). Once done, delete the old home structure then check if you still have the same issue. Also, check if you can delete it from the Assistant settings on the Google Home app. Follow the steps below to know how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap the account icon on the upper right corner. Make sure you are log in on your account linked on the Google Home/Nest device. If not switch account by tapping the drop down arrow beside your account information.
  3. Tap "Assistant Settings."
  4. Tap "Devices" then check if you will see an option to remove unused devices.

If those troubleshooting steps don't work. Please make sure to send feedback on your Google Home app.

Cheers,

Muddi

Me too, the only way I could do it was to create another home. Really poor when smart life app does it really easy

Is that the only way to fix it???? Seems super noodle lame for a tech company to fail on this basic function, especially as i already have my new home set up with google and alexa.

….and a nest thermostat that was already on account.

And still not solved?

Hey folks,

Thanks for visiting the community.

My apologies for the delayed response here. I understand how it feels when you can't remove the unused devices on the Google Home app. A few questions: when did the issue start? Did you use your account to link the device? How many accounts are linked on the Google Home app? What type of device are you trying to remove? Have you tried to use a different phone/tablet? What is the current firmware version of the Google Home app on your phone?

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey Paulcalli,

We know how important this is for you. Kindly provide us the information asked above so that we can further check what's happening with your device. Also, is your disconnected device still showing even after creating another home?

Thanks,

Alex

it is pretty straight forward, it is all operating systems, all versions of the app, and any device that was disconnected from wifi and can’t be reconnected to wifi. you have no option to hit “remove device”. also, if you create a new home, it does not show up as a device to add to the new home since it is disconnected.

Hey obwanknobi,

Understood. When you create a new home and moving your connected devices to it, have you tried deleting the old home that you have?  If so, can you still see your disconnected device in your new home? Also, try clearing the cache and data of your Google Home app then, reinstall it.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Alex

i have 40 items in my Home, I’m not creating a new Home, moving 38 over, reconfiguring them, to delete 2, that’s insane. Where is the option to remove a disconnected device???

So true, their solution is insane.

Amen!!!  I can’t believe the product team and engineers have not thought this one through.

I can't believe google technical support ask to create a new home, this is absolutely silly request.

I have 52 devices and I don't have time to do this.

Don't google have an R&D dept that are supposed to fix these things? Rather than us sort it

Hey folks,

We understand. Could  you give these steps a try?

  1. Open the Google home app.
  2. Tap your device > Settings >  Unlink or Remove device > Unlink or Remove.

Note: Some basic device data may remain associated with the home.

Thanks,

Alex

of course i and many others have tried that. It says “connect device to wifi” and gives no options to remove

Hey folks,

While this is not a security risk, we understand the list of disconnected devices can be bothersome. The appropriate teams are aware of this behavior and have been investigating. You can send a feedback report from the Google Home app, ensure that "Send device usage data and crash reports to Google" is turned on for the device experiencing the issue.

Best,

Alex

Sorry, what has been done to rectify the issue?

instructions were given on how to submit feedback, that’s how it is being resolved

yes, I sent information into the abyss of ignored feedback

I'm constantly sending feedback either by web or through the nest speakers themselves. Never see any improvement or fixes

I have the same exact issue and I own over 50 devices connected to my home system. No way I will remove them all and reconfigure everything.  Very easy to say then done

Not sure if you saw, but you can apparently create a new room. Call it "dumpster". Move the idiotic dead devices you want to remove into that room. Then go into settings and then rooms. Then delete that "dumpster" room. All of the devices within that room then get deleted.

Such an incredibly silly and convoluted solution to something google engineers should have just done already with a simple "delete" option...

That sounds like a great “solution”, but if a device is disconnected you aren’t given access to its settings… hence… what everyone is complaining about…

The original post was about removing a disconnected device - not accessing its settings. That is a separate issue that should be tracked under a separate ticket.

Hi Dazza1,

I'm not sure what you are talking about. My reply was to daveisdigital. I'm not sure why you replied, nor does your reply address a solution to the problem I'm experiencing with removing my “disconnected devices”.

Do your technicians just take in a fat check and not do any work while keeping the Skype status green? Seriously!?… I’m about to migrate over to the Alexa ecosystem even though I am a loyal google customer. Get your act together and fix this coding issue…. It’s not anything new and thousands of customers deal with this issue (all over Reddit as well).

Hi, is there any update to this ? I have an android tv that appears 5 times in my linked devices area. I can’t unlink or remove them.

What an idiotic solution. Jesus.

No need to create a new home. In the Google Home app, go to settings, then go to “Rooms and Groups”. From this list you can select the group with the disconnected device, find it and delete.
